But is this really the case?

No! Don’t be blinded by High yield with monthly distribution!

No! Don’t be blinded by High yield with monthly distribution!

You should exercise caution when considering high yield investments that offer monthly distributions. While the allure of regular income can be tempting, it is crucial not to be blinded by the promise of high returns.

The return of this ETF is very poor since inception date. You are definitely much better investing in other things. Look at the 3 charts below, you actually making losses if you invest in this ETF since its inception date in 2011.

People are drawn to dividend investing.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. Additionally, dividend investing is often viewed as a more stable and predictable investment strategy compared to relying solely on capital appreciation.

FIRE! The beautified ugly side of retiring early

Posted on May 18, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Financial Independent, Retire Early

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is a movement that aims to achieve both financial freedom and early retirement. This is a very controversial topic for discussion, I am putting by head into the chop board for discussing about this topic. Many people want to retire early, hence there are many talks/theories about using withdrawal rate of 2-4% or even use dividend to cover expenses etc… It’s all about saving and investing wisely to build up enough wealth to cover living expenses and have the freedom to retire early and live life on your own terms. Life is so difficult to decide, but that’s what make it beautiful isn’t it?

However, there are many counter arguments for and against it. Recently there was some interesting discussions in a telegram group that I am in. Let me share some of it below before going into the actual discussion.

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

Conversation in a famous dividend telegram group

Someone said these:

When some pple in their 30-40s thinking about FIRE, I met this old uncle recently during one clan meetings. Incredibly he’s in his 90s, but doesn’t look his age and still goes to work daily!
And drives a brand new C class

Many rich ppl 90 plus still working.

My doctor 90 yr old still working. Father and son business. At B timah shopping centre . mind still very sharp . Physical good.

I said these

Different. Rich one go work got minions serve them. Of course everyday go work also can, sometimes can also can dont go office. Poor minion want retire early so that can stop being minion

Yes. 60 plus old people picking paper and cans from rubbish is because they love to work. They would love to continue till their 90s. Contribution to society, feel wanted and exercise.

Yes. The aunties and uncles in my neighbour is still working. They are so old and limping, still working hard to keep the neighbour clean and help with recycling efforts by picking up the dirty cans from rubbish bin. This keep them healthy and mind alert!

Photo by Mihály Köles on Unsplash

Hence, should we FIRE?

There are many arguments PROs and CONs against. Let me share some of these points with you.

1. Why FIRE? You should work as long as you can to keep mind active.

This is true to a very big extend. Not everyone can retire early. Many of us are used to a routine lifestyle. If you retire early, you may find yourself to be bored, don’t know what to do with your spare time which would otherwise by occupied by your usual 9 to 5 job. Many would feel loss, and lose purpose in life (but if your purpose of life is job, don’t you think it is very sad?)

Of course working will keep your mind active (or force your mind to be active), but if you can find something elsewhere (other than your job) to keep your mind active, isn’t it better?

2. Rich people don’t retire. You shouldn’t either.

Rich people don’t retire. Did you see people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett retiring earlier? Or even see your bosses retire early? They don’t. Job is their purpose, their calling and one very key important point is that they are the bosses. If you are the minions and especially if you don’t like your job, you sure want to retire early.

This is similar to what I have said above in the telegram group, it depends on your job circumstances!

3.You are missing out career progression and potentially missing out on additional income and professional fulfillment that could have been achieved by continuing to work.

Retiring early typically means leaving the workforce before the traditional retirement age. This decision can have long-term implications, such as limited career progression and potentially missing out on additional income and professional fulfillment that could have been achieved by continuing to work.

In certain situations, individuals who retire early may find themselves needing or wanting to reenter the workforce. However, reestablishing a career or finding suitable employment opportunities after an extended break can be challenging, especially if skills and industry knowledge have become outdated.

4. Uncertain Future Expenses. Are you sure that you have plan will definitely work?

When retiring early, it’s essential to carefully plan for future expenses, such as healthcare costs, inflation, and unexpected life events. Health insurance and medical expenses, in particular, can be significant considerations, as retiree health coverage and Medicare may not kick in until a later age.

The above is very true, by retiring early, it is very “dangerous” to many. What if you count wrongly on the sums needed? What if suddenly you need money? What if you want to go back work but can’t find any work? No one want to hire you again? All these are valid concerns, do think through before you going ahead with the plan.

5. Social and Identity

Early retirement can impact one’s sense of identity and social connections, especially if friends and peers are still actively working. The shift from a structured work environment to unstructured free time may require finding new social circles or purposeful activities to maintain a fulfilling lifestyle. One may feel one one is worthless without job, without active income to feed yourself and your family.

But, remember this:

the job is not you, you are not your job. Do you believe that if you suddenly drop dead at your job, your company will just find someone to replace you easily? But your family will be sad as you can’t be replaced.

And You will never get a chance to play with your kids again but your company won’t care about you.

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

6. Psychological Adjustment

Retiring early is not as easy as you think. Being the Devil’s advocate, let’s say one has all the money

Transitioning from a busy work life to a life of leisure and self-direction can be psychologically challenging. Some individuals may find it difficult to adapt to the newfound freedom and may experience a sense of loss or lack of purpose.

Mind (in addition to the money which most believe in) is also very important but neglected consideration in FIRE!

7. Loss of Employer Benefits

Leaving the workforce early means giving up employer-sponsored benefits like health insurance, retirement contributions, and other perks. These benefits can provide a significant financial cushion and may be challenging to replace independently.

All these may seem trivia, but when medical issues strive, many would be worried. Have you planned this before you retire?

8. Potential Boredom or Lack of Purpose

Retiring early may lead to a loss of daily structure and a sense of purpose that work often provides. Some individuals may find themselves feeling bored, unfulfilled, or lacking direction. It’s important to proactively seek meaningful activities or hobbies to maintain mental and emotional well-being in retirement.

In short, know what you want to do if you are not working. Don’t just FIRE for the sake of FIRE.

What is your views?

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is always a very controversial topic. If you are planning for this route, please make sure if you plan properly and taken in all consideration (such as the points above) before embarking on the journey. It is not as easy as you think, even for very rich people. Besides having sufficient money for FIRE, there are many many other considerations.

Of course by keep working, means you are selling your precious time away (Time is the ultimate currency, not money) for something that can be printed infinitely by the government. Is it worth it today?

My main purpose of this post is to make people think about their options, what they really want in life? Don’t just work without thinking.

After buying the shares, I will keep my shares in FSM for those that I want to trade so that can sell easily with cheaper commissions as compared to other traditional brokerages.

For those shares that I want to keep, I will transfer it to Joint CDP with my spouse for free.
FSM please continue to keep this free 🙂

I did the transfer many times, so far it took less than a week (most recent one was requested on Tuesday and got transferred on Friday in the same week). But there was once where it took about 2 weeks ~ somewhere around Feb 2023 this year.

With the above, I get around S$1600 to S$1800 almost risk-free money per month. Don’t let your idling cash to waste! Put it into something! Some or all of the options that I have shared above!

Estate Planning

If you look carefully above, I mentioned a lot about Joint account etc. Actually, this is part of my Estate planning. Given that my wife is totally noob in finance matters, I have to keep things simple. Hence, I tried to put as much as our funds in joint accounts if possible. For those that I am unable to, I will cover the shortfall with a “Will”. For FSM, I use beneficiary account with my wife as beneficiary. All the transaction I have kept in a file that I have shared with her privately offline.

Details of how to do Estate planning, perhaps I will share in another post if the readers are interested.

Inflation

With inflation and rising costs in the current world situation, I still missed teh $2 Cai Png and Chicken Rice etc 20 years ago. Now easily each simple meal can cost $4! Everyone really need to find ways to get extra income, even a small amount will help. Do read this post (Unlocking Extra Income: Side income updates) to learn how to get extra little side income!

For those new to finance world, getting your first paid check. It would be good to know how to manage your cashflow too. Do read this post (Cashflow Management Made Easy: How I Simplified my Cashflow Management) for more information!

Time is the Ultimate Currency, not Money

Lastly, please remember Time is the ultimate currency, not money! Below is what I shared in this post.

Money just buy you the chance of freedom. When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

Unlocking Extra Income: Side income updates

Posted on May 12, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

In today’s high interest rate volatile world with raising inflation/cost of living, finding ways to supplement your primary income has become increasingly important. Whether you’re looking to pay off debt, save for a dream vacation, or simply increase your financial security etc, unlocking extra income through side hustles can be a game-changer.

I still remembered chicken rice, cai png etc cost only $2 years ago, not per meal easily cost $4 and above. Everyone really need to find ways to get extra income, even a small amount will help. Side hustles are one of the things that I have been doing. I have been sharing about my side hustles for the past months. Guess now is a good time for an update.

1. Dividend/Interest Income

This is not really side hustle, but this my side income. My dividend / Interest income is about $3k per month. Continue to slowly accumulate good shares if reaches my target price.

However, sadly, as per what I have mentioned in this article earlier (Ultimate Strategy of buying REITS: XXX instead of X000?) no more free dividend for MapletreePanAsia Com Tr and Mapletree Industrial Trust but this means chance to accumulate more cheaper shares of good companies (I mean Mapletree Industrial Trust, not MapletreePanAsia Com Tr).

Cheap can get cheaper, see Manulife and Prime Reit? From billion marketcap to millions marketcap, price keep going down. DPU sure cut, even based on past yield, it can be 20%+, who would dare to buy?

2 years chart from InvestingNote
2 years chart from InvestingNote

Ultimately, dividend investing is for the long term, as long as you vested in good companies, the fluctuation of the price of its shares doesn’t matter much as long it still give decent sustainable dividends in the long run.

2. Rakuten Insight Surveys

I have shared about this interesting side hustle on 10 Feb 2023 (See post: Side Hustle Review – update on how much I have earned after 4 months – Rakuten Insight Surveys). For transparency and responsibility to my readers, let me provide some updates regarding this side hustle.

For those who heard of this for the first time, let me share a little more again.

Rakuten Insight Surveys is a survey website that pays you to complete surveys. You can earn money by completing surveys on your phone or computer, and there are plenty of them available! I started this survey side gig few months ago around Nov 2023. There are a couple of surveys every few days after you have created your profile.

With a little effort, you can start earning money simply by sharing your opinions. I’m going to share how much I have earned so far from using Rakuten Insight Surveys based on fulfillment date.

In total by the end of May I would have earned $100! Not too bad!

Dec, Jan Feb = $30
March = $15
April = $25
May = $30

3. WeBull Brokerage

I know I have been naggy and keep talking about WeBull promotion previously but usually I won’t not give up on good deals, especially for my beloved readers.

I have signed up and drawn 5 shares of Tesla which now I have $75.16 in my account using 1 cent only!

Screen captured from my app

Besides the welcome referral programme that that I shared before via previous fund 1 CENT to get free money, there are now lucky draws for new signs up under their Anniversary Promotion! There are 10 weekly winners for US$888 worth of Telsa Shares and 1 lucky winner of 1 Tesla Model 3 Car.

Only 4 Simple Steps to get free money and a very decent brokerage account

Step 1: Registration

Click here to register a new account.
You can refer to the full details via this article (Webull New Offer: Use S$0.01 to earn US$50 to US$500 and chance to win Tesla Model 3 Car)

4. Moomoo Cashplus

This is one of the brokerage that I have used to earn cash using idling cash. For more information, please read

Moomoo – One Stop Platform for US, SG, HK stocks and a great higher yield alternative to Singapore Saving Bonds using Moomoo Cash Plus!

Summary!

Overall, my main side income still from dividend and interest incomes which come up to about $3k per month with about $xxx from some side hustles from brokerages promotions and doing surveys! Not too shabby! I will continue to build more side incomes. There are so many retrenchment around, who know if you will be the next one? Always good to has income from your non-main job.

Most importantly, don’t forget this!!

Time is the ultimate currency, not money

Time is the ultimate currency, not money

Posted on May 11, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Ultimate currency of life

Although I write finance things most of the time like other finance bloggers, but I am slightly differently. Time to time, I also write some philosophical (or to some, it’s bullshit, talk too much stories with no value since I am not talking about money) article to remind myself and everyone life itself is the end goal, not money. Don’t just pursue money and forgot about life itself.

Let me write something about time and money today.

Money of Freedom

Money just buy you the chance of freedom. When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

What is time?

Time is a currency that is equally distributed to every person on earth, and yet it is one that we often take for granted. While we may strive to accumulate wealth and material possessions, time is the one resource that we cannot buy from anyone and anywhere. It is finite and fleeting, and once it’s gone, we can never get it back. This is why time is considered the ultimate currency, and why it’s important to use it wisely.

Value of time

To truly understand the value of time, we must first consider the nature of money. Money is a currency that can be exchanged for goods and services, and it’s often seen as a measure of success or achievement. We work hard to earn money, and we use it to buy the things that we need and want. However, while money can buy us material possessions, it cannot buy us time. But many don’t understand this and just pursue more and more money.

Time, on the other hand, is a resource that is not finite. We are given a certain amount of time in our lives, and we can choose how we spend it. When you are a baby, you are a time billionaire. As you grow up, you will has less and less time. One day suddenly, you will run out of time. Hence, time is an asset that we should all strive to use wisely, as it’s the one resource that we cannot replenish once it’s gone.

In pursue of money, we might have these regrets

In our relentless pursue of money, success in life, we might lots of regrets.

Since now is the Era of AI, I have asked CHATGPT to give me two things:

1. 20 Regrets of life

  1. Traveling to a dream destination
  2. Pursuing a lifelong passion or dream
  3. Telling someone how you really feel about them
  4. Spending more time with loved ones
  5. Forgiving someone who wronged you
  6. Trying a new hobby or activity
  7. Standing up for yourself or others when it mattered most
  8. Resolving a long-standing conflict with a friend or family member
  9. Apologizing for past mistakes and making amends
  10. Taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone
  11. Exploring different cultures and ways of life
  12. Learning a new language or skill
  13. Taking care of your physical and mental health
  14. Embracing your true identity and being true to yourself
  15. Building deeper connections with friends and acquaintances
  16. Helping those in need and making a positive impact on the world
  17. Taking a chance on love and relationships
  18. Leaving a job or situation that makes you unhappy
  19. Expressing gratitude and appreciation to those who have helped you
  20. Living life without regrets, and doing everything you can to create a fulfilling and meaningful existence.

20 Last Time with your fast growing kids

  1. The last time they fit in your lap.
  2. The last time they need help tying their shoes.
  3. The last time they call you “mommy” or “daddy”.
  4. The last time you rock them to sleep.
  5. The last time they believe in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.
  6. The last time they ask for your permission to do something.
  7. The last time they bring home a crayon drawing from school.
  8. The last time you push them in a stroller.
  9. The last time they crawl into bed with you in the morning.
  10. The last time they need you to help them with their homework.
  11. The last time you watch their favorite TV show together.
  12. The last time you hold their hand while crossing the street.
  13. The last time you give them a bath.
  14. The last time you read them a bedtime story.
  15. The last time they wear a costume for Halloween.
  16. The last time they make a wish and blow out birthday candles.
  17. The last time you attend a parent-teacher conference for them.
  18. The last time you pack their school lunch.
  19. The last time you tuck them in at night.
  20. The last time you kiss them goodbye before they head off to school.

Do you have any of the above?

I am 40 years old now, if I am lucky, 50% to the end of my life assuming 80 years old. Time is fast running out.

For me on the 20 Regrets of life, I am currently guilty of 2, 4, 10, 11, 14, 18 and 20. 7 out of 20 regrets now. I will aim and hope to erase all these regrets before I am gone from Mother Earth.

For the 20 Last Time with your fast growing kids, I already missed some of time and some of it will be gone soon. Example, my elder kid don’t hug us to sleep anymore, don’t let us carry anymore, don’t need us to bathe him anymore, don’t bug us anymore for small little things, he can be alone, don’t need people to accompany…is growing up very fast. My 2nd kid still need all these, but soon will be gone. Hence, we want to treasure every moment.

We (me and my daughter) drew this on 4 May 2023 because I always bring her out to play in playground (the elder brother grew up and seldom go playground now, her mother don’t like bring them to play).

What about you? It’s not too late to think about it now. Of course the above are not the full list. Have your own list and checked them as you achieve it in your life. No matter how busy you are, stop, think what you want in life so that you won’t regret too much later. Time cannot be turned back no matter how regretful you are one day.

I don’t want to put the photo, but I just want to put the date to remind myself that parent is fast gone too.
Saw this from somewhere on facebook but can’t remember the exact source
