Singapore Saving Bonds – SBAPR23 GX23040S – results out! Almost all get what they want!

Posted on March 29, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

The results out

SBAPR23 GX23040S Singapore Saving Bonds results are out! Seems like majority or almost all of the people get what they want.

As you can see, only about 758.1 – 700.0 = 58.1 millions demand applied as compared to the supply!

Only 58.1 / 700.0 = 8.3% of the total applied didn’t get allocated

Applicants who applied for S$68,500 or lower were fully allotted, subject to the individual allotment limits.
Applicants who applied for S$69,000 or higher were allotted either S$68,500 or S$69,000.
Approximately 83.42% of these applicants were selected at random and allotted the additional S$500.

This means most people or even all get all their allocations!

(Personally I have redeemed 40k of my old bonds and applied 80k this time and got everything! This is together with my spouse account.)

If we look at the yield, it give 3.15% (above 3% is not bad for longer term of 10 years) which is quite good as compared to the recent 3.65% of treasury bill and the lowering fixed deposit rates. Next month SSB should be slightly lower but yet not much people applied for this round. If people believe in Fed pivot and the interest rate to come down, why not much people apply?

What does this imply?

I think there are two possibility:

  1. The market is running low on liquidity.
  2. The interest 3.15% is too low for people to lock their fund for 1 month.

What do you think?

Personally, I think is both but more towards point 1.

Perhaps the time for us to deploy warchest is coming soon? 🙂

Good articles that you should read!

People are drawn to dividend investing.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. Additionally, dividend investing is often viewed as a more stable and predictable investment strategy compared to relying solely on capital appreciation.

I always write and share articles, especially on dividends which many people love them. Do read them!

CAREYOURPRESENT

Money just buy you the chance of freedom.

When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.

SBAPR23 GX23040S – Singapore Saving Bonds (SSB) above 3% again. Buy or Bye?

Posted on March 2, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

SBAPR23 GX23040S – Singapore Saving Bond (SSB)

Today is the 1st day of March and the new SSB rates are out again!

We are back to above 3% again to 3.15%.

As mentioned in my post on 24 Feb 2023 (SAVERs – How to maximize your interest and my Market Transaction/Updates), the worldwide interest rates are going up and likely we get chance to buy higher SSB again as well as chance to take advantage of market weakness.

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/singapore-savings-bonds

Let’s see the breakdown of the 10 years rate. 1st year is 3.01% whereas the last year is 3.53% with average at 3.15%. Great rates! S$700.0 million are offered with last day of application on 28 Mar 2023, 9pm. Upcoming payment is on 01 Oct 2023 with subsequent payments (until maturity): Every 6 months on 01 Apr and 01 Oct.

US Interest Rates

If we look at the US Treasury Rates, US6M reached 5.16% with US10Y at 4%! Yield curve is highly inverted again.

Inflation is not going away soon. FED not going to pivot so easily. For those FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and enter the market in the recent rally, do consider keeping some cash in just case to either take advantage of higher fixed income like SSBs or simply wait for further weakness in market which is coming soon.

CNBC

Past issue of SSBs

Let’s look at the rates of recent issues below and you will be able to see which I say the current month rate is decent.

SBAUG22 GX22080V
SBSEP22 GX22090Z
SBOCT22 GX22100X
SBNOV22 GX22110A
SBDEC22 GX22120S
SBJAN23 GX23010Z
SBFEB23 GX23020X

The above are all the Singapore Saving Bonds (SSB) that I have bought previously (I only didn’t buy the March Issue because it is was lesser than 3% and I knew SSB rates are going up).

Buy or Bye?

Hence, should we buy or bye?

Let’s us recap the advantages of SSB first:

  • Very safe – backed by Singapore Government
  • Locked down decent rates of around 3% for 10 years.
  • Easy to redeem and can redeem partial
  • Liquidity needs maximum of 1 month where you can get your money back. Hence suitable as emergency fund.
  • Limit of 200k should be good enough for most people.
  • Can build Bond Ladder to get monthly income (which I already did)

Let’s us recap the disadvantages of SSB:

  • Short term rates are lower than banks’ fixed deposits, money market funds such as MoneyOwl,etc of around 3.5% and above.
  • Low returns
  • 1 month liquidity to redeem your funds may be too long for people who need the funds immediately.

Hence the question is should we buy or bye?

For me I would do a wait and see method.

I have already kept decent amount of Funds in Singapore Saving Bonds and some funds in the higher 6 months Fixed Deposits and MoneyOwl WiseSaver etc. No point to keep putting funds into Singapore Saving Bonds that limit the growth of my funds. I would prefer to buy equities (also Crypto/Options) etc for higher yields as well as capital gain.

Since the last day of application is 28 Mar 2023, 9pm which is still far away. With the current market conditions, Mr Market would likely give chance for me to accumulate cheap assets soon 🙂

If he didn’t, then perhaps I would consider buying this month SSB (and/or redeem lower rate old SSBs).

SAVERs – Best Options to maximise your interests (2)

Posted on February 1, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Update on the rates

This is a short post to provide an update to my previous post.

If you refer to my post two days ago on SAVERs – Best Options to maximise your interests, I have mentioned that the rates will likely goes down – hence please locked in your funds for Savers.

In that post, I have presented 4 options:

  • DBS Fixed Deposit 5 Months Promotion
  • OCBC 4.08% Fixed Deposit Promotion
  • CIMB Fixed Deposits
  • MoneyOwl WiseSaver

CIMB Fixed Deposits

Among the 4 options above, CIMB Fixed Deposits rate are considered as drastic drop as of now.

Compared the two screenshots below, a drastic drop. Hope that you have locked in after my post two days ago.

Rate today
Previous rate

Remaining Options

Luckily the other 3 options that I have mentioned in my post two days ago on SAVERs – Best Options to maximise your interests are relatively intact, do grab while stock last.

For the MoneyOwl, just in case that you are not aware, please note that you can setup joint account after you have setup an individual account each. Remember to fund the account with at least $10 so that you can get the free grab referral voucher before the promotion runs out!

Rate Hike

The next FED meeting is coming soon, there will be a rate hike but likely smaller amount. Overall the rate is still high, grab those high interest instruments if you are a saver.

As an investor, I am not optimistic about the market. Currently it feels like a bear rally to me, to suck all people into before massive crash. The earnings will likely be down with economy in dire situation. Stay safe everyone!

SAVERs – Best Options to maximise your interests

Posted on January 30, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Interest rates are going down

The short-term interest rates are coming down…banks fixed deposits, Tbills, SSBs are coming down. Currently today is near the end of January 2023, likely banks will announce new fixed deposits rate soon. Quite likely it will be same or slightly lower for a while.

Of course, you if are a saver, most likely you would like to put your money in the safest options that you can ever find in the current market. For many, this would mean the three local banks – DBS, UOB, OCBC or Treasury Bills/Singapore Saving Bonds by MAS.

SDIC Insurance

Please take note of the 75k SDIC insurance that we have. Spread your risks across different banks. For those who are unsure how this SDIC insurance works, do read here.

In the event a Deposit Insurance (DI) Scheme member bank or finance company fails, all of your insured deposits with that member are aggregated and insured up to S$75,000 by the Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation Limited (SDIC). Insured deposits held in trust and client accounts held by non-bank depositors are insured up to S$75,000 per account.

In short, your deposits are insured up to S$75,000 per bank/finance company. If you hold a joint account with your spouse, your deposits are insured up to S$150,000 in total (S$75,000 each, assuming each of you don’t hold other deposits with the same bank/finance company).

For example:

Money in your Personal Account with Bank A: $20k.

Money in your Joint account with Spouse with Bank A: $120k.

Amount not insured by SDIC under your name = ($20K + $120K/2) – $75K = $5K

Amount insured by SDIC under your name = $75K (since max is $75K)

Amount insured by SDIC under your spouse’s name = $120K/2 = $60K

Keep things short, for savers, these are few options which you can consider now.

DBS Fixed Deposit 5 Months Promotion

I have received a notification about this promotion with DBS Fixed Deposit when I logged in to my internet banking few days ago:

3.9% p.a. 5 months fixed deposit promotion for a minimum of $20,000 placed.

Promo code: SR5A.

However, this might be for targeted customers of DBS only. Whatever the case is, no harm to try if you are keen? Simply login to your internet banking and submit to apply for it!

Personally, I have quickly applied in case the promotion code run out!

OCBC 4.08% Fixed Deposit Promotion

8 Month Fixed Deposit at 4.08% for OCBC 360 Customers. Don’t miss it! The caveat is you will need to have OCBC 360 accounts in the first place.

https://www.ocbc.com/personal-banking/deposits/fixed-deposit-account

CIMB Fixed Deposits

With 10k minimum, the rate is 3.95% for 6 months, 4.05% for 9 months and 4.15% for 12/18 Months.

For those who think that the interest rate will starts to go down from here, it would be good for you to lock some funds (remember SDIC insurance is 75k) for the 12/18 Months.

This promotion is only until 31 January 2023 (today and tomorrow!).

My guess is the rate will drip from 1 Feb 2023 onwards, do consider locking up some funds that you may be planning to use in 6/12/18 months from now.

While stock last!

https://www.cimb.com.sg/en/personal/banking-with-us/accounts/fixed-deposit/cimb-sgd-fixed-deposit-account.html

Other Options

There are some savers who don’t like to lock up their funds but still like to get high interest rate. Options for this kind of accounts would be using Money Market Funds. There are many companies that offer this – MoneyOwl WiseSaver, FSM Autosweep, Poems Money Market Funds, Tigers’ Broker Cash Plus, Moomoo Cash Plus etc.

Of course, Singapore Saving Bond is another option, but the current 10 years rate is 2.97% and need 1 month to take out. For those who want to lock up their money for longer term with 1 month liquidity, this is a very good option. Personally, I have put in my emergency funds into Singapore Saving Bonds and built a bond ladder using these.

Personally, for Money Market Funds which give high interest rate with few days liquidity, I have Trust Issue and prefer local companies to hold my funds that I indicate to allocate under “Fixed Income”. Hence, I am only using MoneyOwl WiseSaver, FSM Autosweep and Poems Money Market Funds. Out of these three, I would recommend using MoneyOwl WiseSaver for higher rate of around 4% for savers who like high interest and high liquidity.

For regular DIY investor, I would recommend FSM Autosweep as we can use it to buy equities anytime.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. 9 ways to generate passive income

Posted on January 6, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Passive Income

Passive income is a large part of the world’s economy, so it’s no surprise that there are many ways to generate passive income. Many people also like this idea of passive income which helped you to generate extra cash flow that are more passive in nature. In this blog post, we’ll cover 9 different ways you can earn money without having to work for it yourself.

1 Savings Account/Fixed Income

A savings account is the most common way to generate passive income. You can get interest from a savings account, but you may want to consider opening an online savings account or money market account if you don’t want to deal with paper statements and checks.

To open a regular savings account at a bank:

Check out your local banks. You may be able to open a savings account with as little as $100, but many banks require at least $1,000. Some online banks have lower minimums and don’t charge maintenance fees or other types of fees like brick-and-mortar institutions do.

Treasury Bills/Bonds are also good way to generate more interest.

2 Dividend Stocks

Dividend stocks are companies that pay dividends to their shareholders. Dividends are a portion of a company’s earnings paid out to shareholders, and they can be paid in cash or stock. Dividends can also be reinvested back into the company, which means you get more money for your investment!

Dividend stocks are not as popular as other types of investments like mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) as not many are savvy enough to pick the right stocks, but they do have their advantages:

  • You don’t have to worry about market timing because these companies pay out dividends every quarter; this means that there’s less risk involved when you invest in them because it won’t fluctuate wildly like other types do during times when investors panic and sell off their holdings rapidly due to fear or uncertainty surrounding an event happening around them (such as wars).

3 Create an e-book

It’s not always easy to get people to buy a product, but e-books are one way that you can make money from your content. If you have a knowledge or experience that can be packaged into an eBook, consider writing it and selling it online as well as through traditional channels like Amazon and iTunes or even in your own blogs.

In addition to creating something valuable for readers, make sure you write in a way that makes it easy for them to read and value add to them! You want your book to be enjoyable enough so that people finish reading it without having any problems understanding what happened in the ebook.

4 Create a course

If you are passionate about something, teach it! For example, I know how to build websites and make them look good (and I’m not just talking about WordPress), I created a course on how to build websites using WordPress. It’s been really successful because people have been able to take my knowledge and apply it in their own businesses or lives without having any technical background at all.

Create content that will help others as well as yourself: One way of generating passive income is by creating content that will benefit both yourself and others around you – this could be anything from writing articles on topics that interest you personally but also relate back into your own business goals (such as blogging), maintaining social media accounts where relevant information can be found.

5 Write a blog

Blogging is a great way to generate passive income. There are many different types of blogs and each has its own unique purpose. For example, if you’re interested in making money from your blog, then you can possibly create a monetized blog that focuses on affiliate marketing.

If you don’t want to focus on affiliate marketing but instead want to build up an audience for your personal writing style and interests, then another option is starting a lifestyle or personal finance blog where other people will find value in what they write about (for example: recipes).

To start making money from one’s own content via blogging:

  • Write high quality content that relates directly back into the reader’s life experience (this may mean going outside of their box)
  • Be consistent with posting regularly every week/monthly depending upon how fast things move along at work/school etc., usually once per week during off hours especially if there are no interruptions
  • Then you can apply to advertiser like Google Adsense to earn ad income

Get your name out there by commenting on other people’s blogs and leaving links back to your own blog. This is a great way to build relationships with other bloggers and establish yourself as an authority in your niche.

6 Rental Income

  • Rent out your home. If you have a large house or apartment and are looking for cash, it can be lucrative to rent out the space in your house. For overseas, you could also run Airbnb-style apartments if you would like to stay at one location and earn some extra income from the people who visit.
  • Rent out rooms in your house (or other property). If you have extra rooms that aren’t being used at all, consider renting them out.
  • Rent out cars and boats as well as tools such as lawn mowers and trimmers)! Anything can be rented out as long as there are demands for it! All these items can be easily listed on websites eBay.

7 Invest in a REIT

Invest in a REIT. A REIT is a real estate investment trust, which is similar to mutual funds, but with a structure that allows them to pay dividends to shareholders. The most popular type of REITs are those that own apartment buildings and other rental properties, as well as shopping malls and office buildings. They typically invest their money in low-risk debt or high-quality assets (such as residential property) rather than risky stocks or bonds. This can be an attractive option for investors who want exposure to the stock market without taking on any risk themselves—and it’s often much better than investing directly into individual stocks or bonds! In Singapore context, REIT is one of the most popular solution! However, we have to take note of the potential for rights issue.

8 Staking in Cryptocurrency

Staking is a high-risk/high-return investment. If you’re looking to make money, staking is not the best option for you. However, if you want to generate passive income and are willing to take on some risk, then there are many ways that you can earn money through staking via DeFI sites.

9 Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a process in which you promote other people’s products or services and earn a commission from it. The best way to get started with affiliate marketing is by finding an opportunity that fits your niche, then promoting it on social media platforms like Facebook and Reddit. You can also create content around the topic of the product you are promoting so that people who are interested in buying it will be able to find out more about it through your posts.

Once you’ve found an opportunity that feels right for you, all that remains is promoting! There are many ways of doing this: creating YouTube videos (which we’ll cover later), writing blog posts about how amazing this particular product is…the possibilities are endless! Just remember: if someone else has done most of the work already – then just follow their lead!

Conclusion

In short, there are many ways to generate passive income on your own. You can start by saving some money every month and invest it in the stock market or bonds. If you are not planning on leaving your job anytime soon, then you may want to consider investing in a REIT or rental property instead of a lump sum investment like stocks. These two options will give you a steady stream of income without requiring any managerial skills whatsoever! And lastly – affiliate marketing programs are an excellent way for new internet entrepreneurs looking for extra cash flow while building their brand at the same time!

Unexpected SBJAN23 GX23010Z Auction Results

Posted on December 28, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

This is the auction result

Singapore Saving Bonds SBJAN23 GX23010Z results was released at 3pm today. Let’s look at the result released at 3pm today.

This Savings Bond was allotted using the Quantity Ceiling format. Applicants who applied for S$172,500 or lower were fully allotted, subject to the individual allotment limits.
Applicants who applied for S$173,000 or higher were allotted either S$172,500 or S$173,000.
Approximately 95.93% of these applicants were selected at random and allotted the additional S$500.

It’s been a long while since we see this kind of result. 909.7 million applied out of the 900 million offered by MAS. Everyone will get $173000! This is highly in contrast if we compared to the last month application demand of $1.7 billion worth of application. I actually expected the demand to drop but didn’t expect so much.

This simply mean demand = supply. SSB is always oversubscribed with not enough to goes around to all applicants even with the rate rise this year.

What does this mean for the market? What does this mean for the saver?

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/auctions-and-issuance-calendar/issuance-singapore-savings-bond?issue_code=GX23010Z&issue_date=2023-01-03

Let’s do a comparison

The fairest comparison with SIngapore Saving Bonds would be the recent Treasury Bill. The auction result was with the cut-off yield is 4.28%. Total amount allocated is 4.4 billions out of the 11.8 billion applied. This mean 37.2% are allocated. Out of these 37.2%, 1.6 billion are given to the non-competitive applications (see this post for more details).

For treasury bill, it is still oversubscribed. However, the current SSB is demand = supply? What does this mean? I can think of 3 possible reasons. Let’s see.

Possible reason 1:

The market is no longer interested in the 2.95% rate given by MAS. Investor demands for higher rates. They could get much better rate from other more liquid solution such as Fixed Deposit, Money Market Funds etc that I have mentioned in my past post Best places to put Liquid Cash now. Hence, not many people want to apply for SSB now.

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/singapore-savings-bonds

Possible reason 2:

An increase in interest rates can lead to a decrease in liquidity in the market. When interest rates rise, the cost of borrowing money increases, which can lead to a decrease in demand for loans. This can lead to a decrease in the supply of credit, which can in turn lead to a decrease in the overall liquidity of the market.

Does this mean that there is not enough cash liquidity left in the current market. However, if you see the treasury bill, it is still oversubscribed. What do you think?

A “liquidity crunch” is a situation in which there is a lack of funds available for financial institutions or investors to meet their financial obligations or to carry out transactions. This can occur when there is a sudden increase in the demand for cash or a decrease in the supply of cash.

If there is a liquidity crunch, it means market will have issue should there be a crash next year.

Possible reason 3:

It is a freak, unusual or unexpected outcome of an auction result; it just happened that people thought no one will apply and no point to apply so much since SSB always oversubscribed for the past few issues. Hence, people just subscribed less since they thought they won’t be able to get everything anyway. This is similar the last second issue of Treasury bill where the result was 4.4% yield. Hence, is this just a freak result?

How did I fare?

As mentioned in my last post Singapore Savings Bonds SBJAN23 GX23010Z: A Safe and Secure Investment, I have redeemed my old issues and reapplied new issues. Hence, effectively I have managed to refresh my liquidity funds for higher rates 🙂

Which case would it be?

Your guess is as good as mine. No one would know currently but we may find out soon enough. If you notice the recent market, 10 years treasury yield is increasing again. Recession risk also increasing.

For me, I am keeping some cash to wait. It will be sad if you have no cash to buy when asset price become cheap. Patience is a virtue. It is a good quality to have if you want generational wealth.
