Many of us, including myself are asking this question every single day, and most of us can’t find the answers even by our last day on Earth. Over the years that I have lived, I found that people have different purposes in life, and you have to go and find it yourself. No one can tell you or teach you.

Currently I am confused and still finding, but recently I read something which have given me some ideas. Perhaps you can go read and hope that this will help you to find one day. Let me paste some of the texts in the books, do read them. Perhaps those who read this book before can guess the title of this book.


From the above, below is what I have learned. Hope this is useful to you to find your purpose in life too.

Goal of life is to maximize lifetime fulfillment through memories and experiences, not just accumulate wealth. Once you have earned enough to take care of family’s basic needs, then by going to work to earn more money, you might be actually depleting your kids’ inheritance because you are actually spending less time with them OR you might be depleting something else which are much more valuable to you that eventually will help you to reach your lifetime fulfillment.

Anyway, this is the book if you are interested, and you can find this book in library.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

Careyourpresent : Greatest Regrets in life

Let me start this post with quotation by someone famous… 🙂

What is/are your greatest regrets in life? We won’t know until we are at our last moment. Assuming 80 years of life, do you realized most of your time are spent on what for most people nowadays? Don’t live with regrets, or die with regrets…

We can learn from others. Life is short. Let me list down based on what I have found online and can think of.

(1) People did not live a life true to themselves, instead did what other people expected of them. Should have live for own dreams/wish.

(2) Spent too much time working too hard and neglect what things really matters.

(3) Regret not having let themselves be happier. Should enjoy life more and worry less.

(4) Should have been more loving to the people who matter the most.

(5) Wish they had been a better spouse, parent, or child.

(6) Should have chosen more meaningful work instead of just a work that pay bills.

(7) Should have taken more risks to achieve what you wish to achieve.

Careyourpresent : You might not believe it. It’s little unexpected things that make up a real life

This is a totally unexpected unplanned post.

I woke up this morning by the thunderstorm. It’s the usual weekday morning where I have to wake up at 6.30am to prepare my son for school. The big raining sound with cool weather as usual make people want to sleep longer. However, I have a responsibility – to wake my son up for school. Hence, I struggled on the cozy bed 5 minute later and wake up at 6.42am instead of 6.37am.

As usual, I brushed my own teeth before brushing my son teeth. I always wondered how long will he keep allowing me to brush his teeth? Many people hope their kids can be independent soon and don’t depend them so much on small things like brush teeth, but when that day come, can you bear with it? Will you miss it? Believe it or not, that day will come sooner than you expected. Can you remember the day where your kid say they don’t need your help to walk because they want to do on their own? Soon, they don’t need you to send them to school, make meals for them, they only want their friends, gf, bf, spouse etc…If you don’t Careyourpresent now, you will regret it one day.

One day they will not want to hold your hand, treasure that little hands, little things while you can because it can just come suddenly one day…

After brushing teeth, I bring him to kitchen for breakfast as usual. Before I even serve breakfast, the first thing he said surprised me and lite up my day…

I am shocked, touched and happy and… I don’t know how to describe. He remembered the small little things that people always take for granted. This is something – like experiences, memories that will always be there and never be forgotten… Like that the book “Die with Zero” that I have read recently, and the book coined it “Memory Dividends”. Much more beautiful than your usual stock dividends.

Besides the line above, he told me that he like to play in the rain, and he is happy that we have allowed him to play while other parents don’t. He appreciated the freedom and trust that we have given him. Haha, in fact he raised eyebrows. He asked why most other parents allowed their kids to bathe but not play in rain? Isn’t it the same – water? He has just learned about water cycle in school. I have also told him that its funny, every time (4th time this year) that it rains big while I walked him to school, but the rain turns small immediately after he enter school gate while I walked home.

After breakfast, I walked him to school. The drain was flooded. Rain was big but it was fun. He put his hands in rainwater and play. and we appreciated the little 5 minutes’ walk from home to school. We took photos and videos of drains flooding big rains etc which I will shared later at later part of this post.

Careyourpresent : The Art of Doing Nothing and Financial Independent Retire Early (FIRE)

The Fact of Doing Nothing is difficult to most people

Very often, in this society, especially every busy work life, we as part of the city, are used to doing things every single moment of our life. When you take a bus/train, lunch or even talking to friends, many would be looking at their mobile phones instead of just enjoying the moment. Are you one of them? Can you take a moment to rest and throw your mobile aside? Most likely many people would feel very uncomfortable if they do so. What does this imply?

Fact – we are too used to busy schedule and can’t do nothing without feeling uncomfortable!

Irony or not, the most difficult part of your daily life is doing nothing, absolutely nothing. Have your tried to stop whatever you are doing now, just do nothing and stare into thin air. How do you feel? Please go try and feel it. How do you feel? Do you feel weird?

Don’t FIRE! Doing nothing is not productive

Recently there are many discussion on Financial Independent, Retire Early (FIRE). Many people have different opinions about this movement. Some supported it, many people share that doing nothing, retiring earlier is not productive. You should spend all your all time to do something productive, reading a book, study, work until you can’t (60s, 70s), make your life fulfilling. This is especially important for those who want to Financial Independent, Retire Early (FIRE).

One question is always raise when one said that they want to FIRE – “You will get bored easily after FIRE. Maybe initially it will be fun/happy without your busy work, toxic colleagues/bosses, work stresses etc, but after 6-7 months of doing nothing will get you bored! Hence continue to work even if you FI.”

For those who have already FIRE, could you share how do you pass your time? Is the above really true? You really have nothing to do? Or do you live a even more fulfilling life?

Recall

When you were baby, child, kid, do you always have things to do? Do you remember to enjoy the sand, enjoy wind, just staring at the sky? Isn’t doing nothing most relaxing, most comfortable, most fulfilling? Why must we keep doing something every single second? Life is short, treasure it. Careyourpresent, enjoy the moment.

Remember:

In fact, when you are doing nothing, it might be the most productive as your mind is relax, clear and you can think of great ideas.

Try and go do nothing

Careyourpresent: Something only happen once in life, if you missed it, it’s gone forever…

Some thing once you missed it, it will never come back. For example, I received the watsapp message today at 3.49pm while I am working in office.

The first message is my from my kid at 15.49 who ask “Baba, where are you now?“

I replied at 15.58 “I am in office working. Why? Do you want to find me? You miss me?“

He answered at 15.59 “Yes…I have found special way to play/make Plant vs Zombie using the toy solders instead of using playdoh…hehe…just throw like that like that then can le…“

Then 20 minutes later at 16.21, after I have a little spare time at work, I casually replied midst my busy work ” Can explain a bit more, I don’t understand..“

After that, no further reply from him….

Do you think your child can wait until you off work to share with you their school things after you end work or they will share with you while it is still fresh in their mind immediately after school at afternoon?

Do you think your child will msg/call you when they are 18 years to tell you that they missed you or wanted to share something interesting with you?

Do you think your child will still let you hold his/her hand to walk to school or return home from school?

Do you think your spouse will share his/her interesting day stories to you at the end of the tiring work day or to colleagues at work immediately when the thing happen?

Do you think you have the chance to bring your parents out to somewhere when you are very rich but they are too old to walk?

By then maybe you are few hundred Ks or few millions richer, but the time cannot come back…gone is gone…

Recently I have read this article from 15HWW, he is talking about replacing electronic items in advance but I am thinking about something else…

However, if there are critical electronics that needs replacing, like a fridge, air con unit or even laptops, it’s probably good to do it asap before the shortages really begin. Companies and shops have inventory and the supply chain disruption might not have hit them (yet).

This is something that has been in my mind for the past few months…FOOD for survival.

I am also worry about supply chain disruption/inflation especially with two kids and elder parents. My main worry is FOOD. I can make do without electronics but food is a bit difficult.

I can eat lesser per meal and make do with whatever I can but it is difficult for kids and parents. Food is the most basic for survival. Of course, I am assuming no disruption to water supply in SG, hence I didn’t store mineral water. Or should I?

For me, you can say that I am kiasi, kiasu or whatever, but there is no harm in preparing for it. What I have done so far is to store food. See below…

  • Canned food – beans, campbell soup, fruits, mushrooms, vegetarian mock meat (yes, I am vegetarian) etc
  • Dried food – mushrooms, fungus, red dates etc
  • Stables – rice, flours with yeasts (I have a bread machine for making breads), noodles etc
  • Snacks – biscuits, milo, tea, nuts etc
  • Freezers – I always fill food to the brim for the freezers
  • Buy and consume fresh food first, keep all the above as storage.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.
