Farewell Mum. You are always in my mind

Posted on February 7, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Memories always haunt you

This morning I read this article (Farewell Dad. I will miss you.) by Keith and it has reminded myself about recent passing of my mum few weeks agao.

Before you read on, please note that this is a personal article to myself with no component of investments, financial independents topics etc. I just want to share my feelings and remind myself and everyone to CARE YOUR PRESENT before it is too late.

For those who have been reading my articles, I have subtly wrote about my mum passing away in one of my article (Truly understand Living in the Moment now) few weeks ago. I thought this was a private affair of mine, hence I don’t want to put up the full details to the internet for all to see. Perhaps subconsciously, I still want to deny this as a truth/fact of life and just want to hide it somewhere in the deep memories of mine. However, I want to remind everyone including myself to Care Your Present/Live in the Moment, hence I wrote that article.

However, memories come back to haunt me. I am writing this article now with tears rolling my eyes and heart bleeding. I tried to act strong since the passing of my mum on 19 Jan 2023 Thursday afternoon. In front of people I don’t cry, but nowadays I would cry at night after everyone in my family sleep. In the past I used to sleep late, nowadays I tried to sleep early with my wife and kids so that I won’t feel alone at night.

Tomorrow is the San Qi (三七) day for the Chinese’s ceremony for the dead. Coincidentally, it is my birthday and I won’t be celebrating birthday this year. There is nothing to celebrate when the woman who give birth to you has just passed away.

Her conditions

14 January 2023 (Saturday). This is the day of where my mum was admitted to hospital. She was suffering from long term renal disease and was diagnosed as full renal failure (thus need dialysis) 4 years ago. She was a frequent visitor to the hospital since then.

The worse case was in 2020/2021, she was actually admitted to the hospital for an entire year due to a leak in her intestines and many other medical conditions. Cutting the story short, she went through numerous operations (heart, ribs due to fracture after the doctors ditch to save her using CPR etc). She was in breathing tubes, ICU etc. That time we thought she would be gone after the Doctors told us that it is very likely she will be gone given her multiple failures in the major organs. Luckily she survived but she was hospitalized for an entire year – March 2020 to March 2021. After her discharge in March 2021, she was bedridden fully with no ability to do her own Activities of Daily Living (ADL).

As all of her kids are working and it is difficult for us to fully take care of her 24 hours, we luckily managed to get a caregiver helper for her and she did well to help us take care for. My sincere thank you to you if you are reading this. My father was also badly ill with cancer but luckily the Chemotherapy works as of now.

Since that long year of hospital, her health has become weaker and weaker. She still can walk a bit with some help from to other people. We would call taxi to bring her to her weekly Mon, Wed and Friday dialysis. But who knows she also get COVID. Due to Covid, she was hospitalized for 3 weeks, after that she can’t walk at all. We change to getting those wheelchair services (Dexerity, Silver Fleet) etc to bring her for her weekly dialysis and hospitals visit.

Since this episode, she been in and out of hospital very frequently. We are worried but nothing we can do. What I did was to visit her weekly (we didn’t live with them similar to many other married people) and talked to her. Of course bring her to the doctors etc.

The day ambulance come

On 14 January 2023 (Saturday), the week before Chinese New Year, she was not feeling well. Hence we called ambulance to bring her to hospital. I was actually planning to visit her on 15 January 2023 (Sunday) while the caregiver helper on off day. We thought it was her usually in/out of hospital like many past time, but this time is not.

The next few days was horrible. Hospital told us that she was under some kind of infection. Her blood pressure become too low (below 100), hence they can’t do dialysis for her. For those who are unaware, during dialysis, blood pressure usually will drop. Hence for patient with too low blood pressure, they can’t do dialysis because of the risk of cardiac arrest. As time goes by, we were informed that her situation is in a loop – her blood pressure too low for dialysis, but without dialysis, the toxic level in her blood would become too high. Hence they can’t let her eat because this would increase her body load to clear toxins. To push back the blood pressure, they would need to cure the bacteria infection. No food, only drips would make her weak. As times goes by, she went on without dialysis for days.

The day came

It was a thunderstorm day for the whole family. The bad news came on Tuesday 17 January 2023 or Wed 17 January 2023. The doctors told us to be prepared. Everyone can visit her and standby her bed 24/7. She might not make it.

We wanted to celebrate Chinese New Year with her and she was looking forward to it but now we have no chance.

We were with her standby beside the hospital beds, hoping for a miracle similar to 2020/2021 but it didn’t came. Her vital sign suddenly came back on 19 January 2023 3pm plus and we thought got hope. But then suddenly she was gone on 4.44pm. She might be waiting for her grand kids to come before she leave this world (my kids reach below hospital around 4pm plus but can’t go up due to rules).

What’s Next

After which, I can’t believe this is the truth, we went through the usual funeral etc, trying to heal our wounds. It was hard, but have to. Until today, I still can’t fully healed from it but I have grown out from it.

As mentioned in my last article (Truly understand Living in the Moment now) – In the past, I know that I should live in the moment/Care the Present and not to be too worry about future/worry pasts. But to truly know and practice it to the deepest of my soul, I didn’t manage to do it. It was after my passing then I truly understood.

Since then, I vowed to live everyday to my fullness, do things that I love, treasure my love ones around me – to put it bluntly, you will never know when that day that you leave this world will come. Time has no reset button.

Below are was I have posted in that my last article (Truly understand Living in the Moment now), hope everyone really remember to live in the moment, Care Your Present. Time has no reset button, it will be too late to regret in life.

Life and Careers

For those who have been following my article, you might have remember this post (A real life case of Financial Independent but don’t dare to retire early). Let me put it straight to the point. The person that I have mentioned in this article is me.

I have promised my kids that I will be house dad to spend time with them hence I quit my job three months ago.

However, in the past three months, I become worry about money/cashflow, especially if I will have sufficient money to support my mum should something like 2020/2021 year long hospitalization occurred. Rationally I should have enough with cash/CPF, medical insurance coverage, but I still worry. I have also did an analysis previously (You will likely never run out of money with 1 million: Expectation vs Reality) which mathematically prove my points of having enough (of course I have more than 1M).

The three month notice period wasn’t what I had imagined. I was living in constant worry about future and regretting about queuing a decent job with nice cashflow etc. In the end, I wasn’t able to give my fullest to the kids. I became emotionally unstable and not being able to live in the present.

I don’t know if this was fate or my mum’s wishes, about 1-2 days before her last day on Earth, I was in discussion in my company to continue with my role instead of leaving since they can’t find replacement. That time I was too worried about my mum, hence I said yes to continue to get one thing out of my mind. At this moment, I am not sure if I am right or not.

Fast Forward to Today

Now then I know I was wrong then for that 3 months period.

After my mum passing, I realized that time is the most important. Something once you missed it, it won’t come back. My kids everyday was hoping me to bring them out to play after their school around 5pm plus, but I can’t due to work commitment. Last week, her teacher told me that my kid told her that she most look forward to her daddy to bring her out to play (not look forward to daddy buy her new toys).

Let’s fast forward a bit, imagine years from now I am on death bed or after my kids grow up to secondary/JC/Poly/UNI…

  • Would I regretting missing my monthly paycheck that give me stability of monthly cash flow despite having enough cash flow from dividends/other investments?
  • Would I regretting missing the time where my kids keep call me daddy daddy, ask me to accompany them and bring them to play? Do you think by the time I have lots lots of money and they have grown up, they still want me to bring them out to play or they rather go out with friends?

Conclusion

Anyway, let me get back to life today. I have promised myself to live a fulfilling life, Care My Present, with or without my 9 to 5 job that give me monthly paycheck. Live everyday to the best and see how it goes.

Don’t worry too much about the past or regret the future. Time has no reset button.

Please treasure every single second of your life – CARE YOUR PRESENT!

People are drawn to dividend investing.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. Additionally, dividend investing is often viewed as a more stable and predictable investment strategy compared to relying solely on capital appreciation.

Money just buy you the chance of freedom.

When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.

Truly understand Living in the Moment now

Posted on January 30, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Most Powerful way to Live in the Moment

Does anyone remember my past post on how to generate the most powerful way to Live in the Moment?

Most Powerful Way to Live in the Moment

In this article, I shared that the most powerful way is to imagine…

Imagine, you are living your life as per normal today – 7am wake up, say bye to your loved ones, go to work and be home 8pm. Hence, you do live your usual rat race life to grow wealth and get your beloved monthly paycheck.

Suddenly this happens…

Hospital: Created using https://creator.nightcafe.studio/

You found yourself woke up in the hospital, the doctor told you that you only have few hours left to live because you met a car accident on your way home today and you are seriously wounded.

Basically, in short is to imagine the end of your life NOW and what makes your regrets. Then take action to change yourself and live for the better today.

However, how many truly understand this?

Truly Understand Live in the Moment

When I wrote that article, I also thought I have truly understood what is meant by living in the Moment, don’t regret past or worry about future etc. But I am totally wrong.

“You are so anxious about the future that you do not enjoy the present. You therefore do not live in the present or the future. You live as if you are never going to die, and then die having never really lived.”

Dalai Lama

In my past life, I was worried about whether I have enough money to take care of kids, parents, own living expenses, whether my life, work, investment plans work or not; regretting if I have made any wrong choices in the past, be it work, investment etc. Every day of course, I reminded myself to Care and live in my present.

Most of the time I did treasure my present on the outside, but inside being a high S person (DISC profiling), I am a constant worrier. After being present in the moment for a while, I would drift away to plan for the future. My guess many people also fall in this category – you know the theory, the rules of life, what’s important in the life, but to truly embrace it, not everyone can do it.

What lead to this change?

In my current life, I am different now. I truly embrace and understand living in the moment, caring your present (which what this blog is about).

I was too focusing on the tools (how to improve productivity, grow income/wealth, plan for future etc) to achieve the ultimate goal of living a fulfilling life on daily basis instead of the ultimate goal itself.

What lead to this change?

Sadly, it is something irreversible – my beloved mum passed away 1+ weeks ago. Time really don’t have reset button.

Like many people, I became a weekend son after marriage. I visited my parents every weekend while weekdays hustling with 9 to 5. On the weekend one week before my mum went into the hospital for the last time, I was emoing (worry about future, regretting about some past decisions etc), hence I decided to “take a break” and don’t visit their house for one week. Since I visited them every weekend, one week don’t visit doesn’t matter. right?

However, sadly I was wrong. That was the last weekend I can visit and talked to my mum while she is conscious. The next time I saw her after that week was in hospital where she was highly unconsciously, eyes closed, blood pressure/heart rates keep dropping etc. I tried talked to her, but she can only shake head without opening her eyes – she seems to understand what I said but cannot react to it meaningfully.

The next day afternoon, she was gone suddenly. No pulse, no heart rate, just lying there cold. I was devastated, and don’t know what to do, cannot believe this fact.

Please live a Fulfilling Life Everyday Every Moment

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.

We always thought that we have more time to play with your kids while they are growing up every day very fast. With a blink of an eye while you are busy hustling away 9 to 5, trying to earn more and more money (maybe you already have enough, but you keep thinking you don’t. Read this post: You will likely never run out of money with 1 million: Expectation vs Reality), they are already so big. They no longer want to play with you. They want to go out with friends. By then no matter how rich you are, 10 millions/10 billions, they still rather go out with friends. You missed it means missed it. There is no reset button.

Twitter Posts

Let me share a few tweets that I have posted these few weeks after my mum passed away. I used to be posting a lot to share my views but didn’t for these 1.5 weeks after my mum passed away. Hope you get what I want to send through to anyone reading this in this world.

The only thing that you cannot reset in this world is time.

Treasure every moment of your life.

Live in present.

Don't regret past.

Don't worry future.

Build your bullets and skills and mind yo achieve the above.

It's hard.

But it will be the most worthy thing in life.

— Edmond | Careyourpresent (@careyourpresent) January 28, 2023

I am wrong in the post below.

Imagine your death bed is not the most powerful way.

The most powerful way is to experience the death of your loved one – which I did on 19 Jan 2023 before CNY.

Hope everyone learns to live in moment before it's too late.https://t.co/25mMVdJ8oV

— Edmond | Careyourpresent (@careyourpresent) January 24, 2023

Once life stops, whatever you have (money, social status, assets etc) doesn't matter anymore.

Thus, before life stops, make full use of your everyday before it is too late.

Save Time, Earn more, live life.

— Edmond | Careyourpresent (@careyourpresent) January 24, 2023

Life has no reset button. Time is the most precious, not money

But say is easy, do is difficult.

It's real-life experience that will make you change your perspective about time

I just lost my love one few days ago

Now I truly understand that time loss can never come back

— Edmond | Careyourpresent (@careyourpresent) January 22, 2023

You only live once.

Once you have enough money, please choose your life instead of more money.

So that no regrets

Move on and Living Fulfilling Life Everyday

I have moved on and now is living a fulfilling live every day.

  • Wake up everyday and believe/will achieve that today will be a beautiful day
  • Grateful every day on what I already have – spouse, kids, life, health, some money which is enough to sustain family for a long long time
  • Grateful that I am alive and healthy and can do what I want
  • Living in present every moment, never regret past or worry too much about future
  • Understand life and time has no reset button – the greatest asset that one will have in life and is depleting every second. Time is ticking away…
  • I will spend every moment to live a life that I want, not a life that society wants me to be
  • Living a fulfilling life for every second of my life whenever possible

I truly hope that anyone that has read this article please think and reflect on your life before it is too late. Always aim to live a fulfilling life/a life that you truly believe to live for. Focus on the end goal not the tools (wealth, work, money, increase productivity, every second must work to be productive etc). Of course, these tools are important, but they are not the end goal.

Really, days are long, but years are short. Time has no reset button. You will never know if you never wake up tomorrow. (If you visit cemetery, there are people who died very young if you observe carefully, 40+, 30+, 20+ 10+ or even a baby). Don’t regret or worry too much about future.

Most important, please live in moment and Care Your Present.

Art of Time – Past, Present and Future

Posted on January 26, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Past VS Future VS Now

The past is the past and it’s gone. The future is unknown and it’s not here yet. The only time we have is right now, so let’s live in the present moment!

Enjoy the present moment

If you want to live in the present, you must learn how to enjoy it.

You can’t enjoy the present if you are worrying about the past and/or future.

You can’t enjoy the present if you’re worried about what others think of you.

You can’t enjoy the present if you’re worried about your mistakes or failures or successes, etc…

Have faith in a better tomorrow

When people say that they don’t think about the future because it’s too far away, I can understand where those feelings come from. In my life, the future has always been a mystery: when I was young and lived with my parents, the far-off future meant what would happen in college or after that. When I had to rely on myself as an adult, it became even more difficult to predict what was on the other side of an upcoming milestone or event—I’d get stuck thinking about how things could go wrong rather than preparing for them to go right!

But regardless of whether we’re talking about small moments like your commute home from work or larger ones like retirement plans and vacations abroad (or maybe even something as abstract as “what will happen” when you die), there’s one thing we can all do: believe that our lives will be better tomorrow than they are today. Even if we’re not sure how this might happen; even if we aren’t sure at all…our hope is still there!

Do not compromise with the present

  • Do not compromise with the present.
  • Live in the moment, be aware of your surroundings, body and thoughts.
  • Be aware of how you feel inside as well as outside your body – this is what is called “being in touch with yourself”
  • If it’s causing any pain or discomfort then you have a problem to deal with head on so that you can move forward without being scared about the future because nothing was dealt with properly when it happened originally

Do not go around in circles

Life is a gift and it should be lived. It’s your life and you can do whatever you want with it. You can choose to live in the past or future, but if you live in these things, then which one is true? If I say that “you” are someone else and that person is dead and gone, then how do we know if this is true or not? If there was an accident on the road, would you really have died if I had stopped my car from swerving off course? If someone comes up with a device that stops time travel from happening because it could cause harm (and chances are high for causing harm), then what about all of those who already traveled through time before said device was invented? Would they still be alive now after having gone back into their own time periods during their lives as others but when they died before this invention came out?

If something happens today between two people who love each other very much so much that one dies at some point in time due to nature’s wraths like hurricanes etc., would they really die forever off course just because of what happened between them years ago during childhood where both were best friends until one decided otherwise due to finding another who they thought was better than their first friend…?

Dont live in past

The past is history and the future a mystery. But today, only today, is the present. That’s why it’s called the present.

The present is all you have to live for because you can’t change what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow. No matter how hard you try to relive the past and plan for an uncertain future, your efforts are wasted on what was and what may be. The only thing that truly matters is being here now—today—because this moment is all we have available to us at any given time in our lives.

If we invest our time trying to live in another time or place other than now, then we’ll never get anywhere because we’re stuck focusing on things that don’t exist anymore!

Dont live in future

  • Live in present.
  • Enjoy the present moment.
  • Have faith in a better tomorrow, but don’t compromise with the present because if you are not living right today, then you cannot have a good future.
  • Don’t go around in circles (worrying about the future and regretting the past)

Don’t worry about the future and don’t regret the past

You can’t predict the future, but you can plan for it.

Planning your future is not a waste of time. It allows you to set realistic goals and make plans to achieve them.

However, if you spend too much time worrying about things that haven’t happened yet then it can be distracting from what is happening now!

The past is another thing we don’t have control over so it makes no sense to regret it or wallow in self pity because things didn’t go exactly as planned.

Live for now

You can’t live in the past or future, so you only have the present to live in. You can’t be here and there at the same time. Choose one: either you are here or there, but not both.

If you’re thinking about what went wrong yesterday, it’s too late to change it—you should have done that yesterday! If you’re thinking about what will happen tomorrow, it may never come—you should focus on today and enjoy every second of your life!

Conclusion

It is very important to live in the present moment, because life is too short to worry about the future or regretting your past. So, savor every moment of your life and make it worthwhile by doing something new every day. If you want to be successful in your future, then start taking steps towards it today!

Always productive VS always not productive

Posted on January 18, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Being productive (always)

We are used to being known to be productive (must do something) for every single second of our life and investment. Otherwise, we would feel uncomfortable and feeling waste of time and life.

This is because we think it’s our duty to do it instead of enjoying life. However, we should care for every second of our lives because time passes by so fast that one day you will wake up and see your life has gone without accomplishing anything.

You should know that there is no need to be productive all the time. If you want to live your life fully then you should know what is going on in your present and future so that you can make better decisions regarding investments or anything else.

Know your present.

It’s important to know your present. Knowing what is happening now will help you make better decisions, be more successful, and care for others.

Why? Because there is no need to be productive. When you’re in the present moment, there’s no need for productivity because everything is happening right now! You don’t have to worry about being productive or not—you can just be happy and content with what’s going on around you right now!

Know your future.

The future is unknown. It’s impossible to predict what will happen, so don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.

Instead of getting anxious about the future and trying to control what you think you can’t change, let go of that burden and focus on being productive today.

Not knowing what will happen can be stressful when we are afraid of failure or success in our lives, but it also gives us room for creativity and exploration as we seek new opportunities that may not have been available before.

Be patient and plan first before you invest

There is no need to be productive for every moment of your life including investing. Investing is a long-term process, and it requires patience. You have to invest in companies/cryptos etc when the market is low or in favorable conditions, so that you can sell them later with a good return on investment. There is no need to keep buying/selling/trading every single week, or even every day.

There is no need to invest in every stock market condition.

The best time to buy a stock is when you have the funds and confidence to hold it for as long as possible.

If you’re buying with the intention of selling within a year or two, you should look at short-term opportunities instead.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

You have a finite amount of time on this earth. You can’t do everything, nor should you try to. Be happy with the life you have now, not the one in your head or the one from some movie or someone else’s story. If it isn’t working for you now, change it! Don’t worry about what might happen tomorrow; enjoy today for all that it has to offer. Your family and friends are what matter most—if they aren’t important to you then your life isn’t worth living anyway!

Don’t let other people’s stories get in the way of yours; don’t compare yourself or your accomplishments with theirs because at least half of those stories won’t turn out like they had hoped anyways (and another few hundred will fail before they even start). Instead focus on living your own story; find out who YOU really are and make decisions based off what makes YOU happy rather than what anyone else thinks would make YOU happy based off their experiences which may not apply directly to YOUR situation anyway…you get where I am going here right?

Be happy.

The first step to being happy is learning to be happy with what you have. If you can’t find happiness in your current situation, then what future situation will make you happy?

It’s much easier to find things to complain about than it is to find things that are right with the world. It’s hard not to compare yourself with others and wish for more than you have, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea or that there isn’t something better out there for everyone. Everyone has different needs and desires, so it would be impossible for everyone’s lives or lifestyles to match up perfectly.

Instead of focusing on what other people are doing in their lives (or worrying about all of the possibilities), focus on yourself and how your life could be better now instead of always thinking about how it might be someday down the line when certain things happen, if ever at all!

Care your life, your family and your friends, then you will be happy.

The key to being productive is to care about your life and the people around you. If you are happy, then it will be easy to be productive. It is not necessary to be doing official work to be productive.

I want my readers to enjoy their lives, and I want them to have fun with it all. I don’t feel like having a “life hack” for being productive would help anyone in any way. You should care about your life, not just make it more productive!

Life’s really short. Life’s really beautiful. You’ve got to live it to the fullest.

The thing is, life’s really short. Life’s really beautiful. You’ve got to live it to the fullest.

Sometimes we get caught up in this productivity thing—this idea that we need to be productive every single day of our lives if we want to be successful, if we want to make money, if we want anything at all. But that’s not true! And it can actually cause us a lot more stress than necessary if we’re not careful about how much time and energy we put into things that are outside of our control (like other people).

So what should you do? How can you work smarter instead of harder?

You always want to control everything in your life, but you can’t do that.

There are many things that we can control in our lives. We can control the number of times we brush our teeth each day, or how many steps it takes us to get from one place to another. We can control what we eat for dinner, or whether or not we want to go outside. As humans, this is a natural desire; as social creatures, it’s also one that benefits us greatly. But there are some things you just don’t have any power over—and sometimes even when you do have control over something, it’s still not going to go your way because of other circumstances beyond your control (like someone else’s actions).

In order to stay productive and keep yourself sane during those times when bad things happen and no amount of planning will help alleviate them (like losing your job or getting ill), it’s essential that you let go of these external forces and accept them as they come into play in your life at any given time.

You know how it feels when things go wrong.

There is no need to be productive.

You know how it feels when things go wrong. You can’t control the weather, or other people’s actions, or your health, or your future, or your past. What will happen next? It’s easy in these times to feel like there is nothing you can do but try harder and work longer hours—which only makes things worse! When we give ourselves a break from our worries and let go of expectations and perfectionism (and maybe even a little bit of guilt), we become more relaxed in our lives and more willing to take action on our goals.

Care your present and enjoy life

If you’re a highly-productive person, it’s important to remember that you can’t control everything. You can’t be productive all the time, and your productivity may only last for a few hours at a time before you need to recharge. It’s important to take care of yourself by making sure that you’re getting enough rest and relaxation in your life—you need both in order to feel good and be happy!

It’s also important not to worry about things that are out of your control—if something isn’t going as planned, don’t worry about it too much because worrying won’t help anything! Instead of worrying about problems when they come up (or even before they come up!), focus on enjoying what is happening now so those moments won’t pass without being appreciated.

There is no need to be productive for every moment of your life

There is no need to be productive for every moment of your life. There are those moments when you are working on something that matters and that’s great, but there are also times when you just want to relax or play around with a new idea and there’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t waste your time on things that don’t matter and don’t care about other people’s opinions because they’re not going to live your life for you. Do what makes you happy and if it doesn’t work out then at least you tried and learned something from it (even if it’s just how much harder it is than expected).

Careyourpresent and don’t need to be productive every single moment

There is no need to be productive for every moment of your life. You can be productive when you need to be, but if you’re not in the mood, then don’t worry about it. Work when it’s time to work and relax when there’s nothing else on your mind other than enjoying yourself. Finally, remember to Care Your Present!

CAREYOURPRESENT

A real life case of Financial Independent but don’t dare to retire early

Posted on January 16, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Financial Independent and Retire Early – The dream of many people

This is the topic that many people like to think and dream about. Work hard, earn high income, save more, spend less, grow your passive income in order to become Financial independent. After that you can retire early and have all the free time you have to do whatever you like – This is the daunting DREAM of many people including myself. However, how many people can really achieve this? Is it really that easy to FIRE (Financial Independent and Retire Early)?

Do you believe? Financial Independent is easy but Retire early IS NOT EASY

I can tell you that this is not easy! It is not easy. The not easy part is not the – Work hard, earn high income, save more, spend less, grow your passive income in order to become Financial independent. This is difficult but achievable. It’s the RETIRE EARLY part that is difficult. Too much time on hand is not easy. Regardless you are financial independent or not – Routine schedule, steady salary with a job is so much easier for most people. Don’t believe me? Really? Let me share a story.

Story of Financial Independent and Retire Early

Beginning of Story

Let me share with you a story that I have learnt from somewhere.

Ten, twenty years ago in a country, there lived a young chap who just started work after university. Similar to many young chaps, he is also disillusioned by the 9-6pm routine, working until you are very old in the 60s+ before retiring, then enjoy your last 20 years (if lucky) of retirement life.

How to achieve Financial Independent and Retire Early

Similar to many others, one of the most common ways to achieve this is studying for decades for a good degree, find a good job, climb corporate ladder, grow high income then Work hard, earn high income, save more, spend less, grow your passive income in order to become Financial independent. After Financial Independent, he can retire early and enjoy life, in SHORT FIRE!

He read books, study, learn investment, work hard to grow his income, reduce expenses. Like many others, he understands that Time is a more valuable asset than money. Most people are just exchanging your life energy for money. Hence, since entrepreneurship may not be easy, with higher risk of failure, he gets a decent job with good salary. Then he lives below means, save 50-80% of income, the actively read books, articles, learn from others in order to invest well and grow his investment income.

Overall, he is actively building his network over time.

Image of these books are from https://www.amazon.sg/

After slightly more than a decade of hard work…

Time flies, after slightly more than a decade of hard work. He got married, got 2 kids (one in preschool and one in primary one in year 2022) and live a life envy of many. In term of employment, although he didn’t get super high salary, but it’s decent enough for his family to live based on his income alone. Together with his spouse income and their family habits of living way below means, this family saved a lot, and achieved the following:

  • Exceeded CPF Full Retirement in Special Account only for both him and his spouse. This means that even both of them stopped work immediately, they should get at least 2.5k each (total 5k) from 65 years old onwards
  • A house that is not fully paid but can be paid off easily with CPF Ordinary account anytime. In fact, they balloted successfully for a new BTO which will be ready in 2024 which they should be able to pay off with CPF Ordinary account easily – they bought new house so that can refresh the lease to 99 years. In the worst case where they run out of money when they are old, they can downgrade the house.
  • Full Basic Health Sum for both of them
  • Medical and Life Insurance fully covered
  • Decent amount of Networth with dividend cashflow that should be able to cover their monthly expenses with a little buffer
  • Keeping to low expenses with no car (they rather save the money to invest although they can afford it)
  • War chest to invest into the markets should there be crash
  • Emergency Funds for 2 years put in Singapore Saving Bonds that can be redeem with few days to longest a month
  • Keep daily cashflow of around 1-2 months for usual spendings

Given the above and after procrastinating for at least 1 year, they decided to activate a plan that they had planned long ago since they got their first child.

Their Problem

Many would be asking what is their plan? If it the Financial Independent and Retire Early? FIRE?

The answer is no.

The main objective behind this plan is to solve a problem that is causing headache to many people – childcare when the child reaches primary one.

How to solve childcare problem? They are 4 main common options in this society:

  1. After School Care – many people took up this option! This is great. There are teachers to take care of them, help to do homework, fed them, many activities etc…
  2. Hire a helper – This option is much cheaper compared to the salaries that they are drawing now. They also get to be freer with more me time.
  3. Grandparents helping to take care – this option is great for many people.
  4. Latch key kid – Give money and keys to kid and ask kid to go home after school at 1.30pm. Most kid at Primary One should be able to do that.

Which option did they choose?

None of the above.

Their Plans and Beliefs

Let me go one step backward to share their beliefs first. They believe that a child should have someone to accompany when they are growing up so that the child feel that home is safe and can share theirs thought. Home will be their safe Habor. The question is who is that someone? They have analyzed the 4 options above:

  1. After School Care – they don’t want to put their kid into this. Their primary one kid was put in infant care since the kid was 3-4 months old because they need to work to get income. They have missed so much time with the kid already – kid is only young once. Once the time missed, it will never come back.
  2. Hire a helper – this is possible, but they have to get a good helper. But on second thoughts, even with a very good helper, they don’t want a scenario such that when the kid needs help, need someone to talk to/share feelings with (example fall down, feel sad/emo/happy due to whatever things happen in school) etc, to find helper instead of parents. Worse case, helper become the kid’s “Mom” instead of the real “Mom” (this is true, if you observe surrounding carefully).
  3. Grandparents helping to take care – this option is great for many people but not for them. Their parents are too old to be able to take care of young children and different parental beliefs.
  4. Latch key kid – They feel sad to create another latch key kid. It’s sad to go home and see empty nest. Most of the time, the kid just hangs out with other kids or something else which might lead them astray?

Oh No! All the 4 options don’t work. What can they do?

The Decision

They decided to give up one of the high salaries and has one of them stay home for 5 years (until the kids can manage on their own independently which is around 5 years). This mean a change from dual income to single income. However, with inflation, ever rising cost of living, this is a very tough option. It is a big risk that they are taking. Moreover, who is the one to stay home?

Who?

After much deliberation, the answer is the young chap. Why? Isn’t usually the wife who stay home to take care of kid? It is out of society norm to has husband stayed home. He will be laughed at! After finding out more from them, these are the reasons that they have given me.

  • In term of monthly salary and yearly bonus, the wife earns much more.
  • In term of flexibility in terms of hours/working from home etc, the wife’s work gives better flexibility.
  • In term of career progression, the wife’s job has higher salary/corporate ladder progression
  • The wife loves her job as she feels it is contributing to society.
  • The husband doesn’t like his job, treat it as something that generate money paycheck.
  • The husband is the one the spent more time with the kids whenever he is free after work. The wife preferred more free personal time. The husband is the one managing all the finances/investment, doing side hustles to earn more income for family etc. All these takes up time. If the husband quits, he will free up time for all these MORE IMPORTANT things.
  • Mentally the wife is stronger, the husband has childhood trauma with his parents, this might be a good time for him to take a career break to heal.

Additionally, since their cashflow from investments cover their expenses (as mentioned above), changing from dual income to single income should work.

Advantages of this option

Exercising this option have numerous advantages.

  • The kid has an adult (his own beloved parent) to grow up with them.
  • Someone will be there anytime rather than physically is there but mind is not there during work from home days. Those unexpected moments when the kids what to share things with them happen usually after they are at home in the afternoon after school. He challenged me that if I don’t believe this point, I can go ask my kid to share what had happened to the child in school today at around 7pm when I am back home from work.
  • Don’t need to worry who take leave when child sick/no school due to any special event etc.
  • Don’t need to worry about childcare arrangement for Jun/Dec school holidays.
  • The husband will have more free time to think through his life.

Risks of this option

After careful analysis, of course there are risks to this option. Below is what they have told me:

  • Although their cashflow from investments cover their expenses, but innately most FIRE people still have the fear of running out of money. What if there are sudden medical expenses? What is inflation/eve rising cost of living raised the expenses so high that their investment cashflow cannto cover the expense?
  • What if financial crisis strikes? Can their portfolio take the hit and maintain enough cashflow to cover the expenses? Of course, the wife’s salary can cover but this is still a risk.
  • What if the wife loses the job and at the same time investment cashflow turns into issue?
  • Both of them are late thirties, it is a big risk to retire early/career break early. What if they run out of money and want to go back work but no one want to hire back the husband? Resume with career break usually will be questioned by the employers.
  • Husband stayed home is against society norms. Can he take it?
  • Identity Crisis – what should he call himself? Stay at home dad (SAHD), Someone taking Career break? Unemployed? Someone Financially Independent and retire early? Penguin Daddy?

Benefits outweigh the Risks

After considering the pros and cons of the above method, they decided to still go ahead with this option. The husband tendered his resignation with last day at the end of January 2023. On the day where he broke the news to his boss, he was nervous and scared.

Nightmares begin

Few days after he tendered; the nightmare began.

Too much free time

He suddenly felt very loss. He was given less roles in his current jobs as he prepared for the handover. Suddenly he has so much free time. He suddenly realized that he might have made a big mistake. Too much free time is scary. How can he fill those voids of empty time?

Let’s say he identified himself as the Dream status of many people – FIRE! Now he achieved it. Remembered my first paragraph above (copied and highlight in yellow below for easy reference)? However, he suddenly realized what I meant by

Routine schedule, steady salary with a job is so much easier for most people.

Loss of identity is real

Although this was one of the risk items that he has already identified earlier but He suddenly realized that this becomes real. He really dont know what to call himself now, he doesn’t know how to cope now. He was a manager. Now what is he? Stay at home dad (SAHD), Someone taking Career break? Unemployed? Someone Financially Independent and retire early? Penguin Daddy?

Something really felt wrong when he called himself all these. Until today, he still doesn’t know what to call himself.

Loss of Purpose

He suddenly felt a loss of purpose. This wasn’t one of the risk items that he has listed earlier but it just came out. Everyone in this world is always seeking for the purpose of life. What is his purpose of life now? Just to take care of young kids which they might not even remembered/understand the sacrified that their dad made when they grow up? Stay home dad? FIRE and enjoy life while his wife still working?

Childhood Trauma

From what I know about him, he was suffering from childhood trauma. His parents never believe him, even when he is late thirties now. He once shared a story with me – One day when he cycled with his kids on bicycle to visit his parents to their houses, the first thing they told him is “You can cycle the kids safely meh?” Then they would nag and “teach” him that he must go on pavement instead of roadside, must go this route that route etc, then end with the line to tell him better he doesn’t cycle as he cannot. Whatever he wanted to do, shared with him parents what he wanted to try and do, is always ended with “You cannot do it”.

Hence, he grew up with a void, with no confidence in anything he does. He felt that he is useless although in fact his achievements are decent (met FRS, house no issue, emergency funds no issue, insurance no issue, decent cashflow from investments, nice family with supportive spouse and kid etc). Anyway, this is one of the key reasons(s) why he wants to grow up with his kid (to relive his childhood and be a supportive parent).

Worries Worries and more Worries

Back to the story, this weakness of him suddenly reality struck after he resigned. He became more and more worries every day. What if he can’t find a job after 5 years? What if his investment fail? What if his wife also falls sick and cannot work (hence no buffer should investment fail)? What if he got too much free time after Jan 2023 and really don’t know how to fill the time? What if he can’t be a good parent at home with kid? What if he really loses his sense of identities and sunk into depression? What if he can’t find his purpose of life? What if he really become useless? He Might sunk into depression…

What I have advised him

This is what I have advised him.

Will you regret missing out the time spent with your kids or regretting not working for another 5 years to earn more income on your death bed? Do what is important NOW that will not make you regret. But ultimate decisions belong to him as I am not him.

Conclusion: Do what is important NOW that will not make you Regret

Until today, he is still worrying, wonder if he did make the right decision. Everyday emoing, feeling worries… I can’t help him much, but I told him:

Do what is important NOW that will not make you Regret!

To whoever is reading this story out there, trust me.

Regardless of many Financial Independent Retire Early (FIRE) stories/articles that you have heard/dream of achieving, Financial Independent difficult but achievable. It’s the RETIRE EARLY part that is difficult.

Lastly, I want to end this article with my banner to remind everyone to CAREYOURPRESENT!

Anyway, this story will be continued again later. Those interested to know the update, please come back to read again. Please leave your comments if you have any advice to teach this young chap.

Good articles that you should read!

I always write and share articles, especially on dividends which many people love them. Do read them!

CAREYOURPRESENT

Enhance your personal productivity using Excel Macros

Posted on January 3, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Supercharge your Life

One of the key themes of my blog is to improve life. Hence using productivity tools will helped to improve your work life/personal life too.

Twitter

I have shared these tweets on Microsoft Excel Macros that I have created few days ago via Twitter. Hence, I thought I should share with my blog user too in case you are not my follower on Twitter.

Let me extract what I have posted in Twitter

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

End of 2022, let me share something nice!

In the corporate world, Microsoft Office suite is undeniable one of the most important tools.

Out of the Office suite, one of the most powerful tools would be Microsoft Excel.

In excel, we can use Macros to automate many tasks…yet…

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Most people still don’t know how to use it.

In its most simple form,

A macro is an action or a set of actions that you can run as many times as you want. When you create a macro, you are recording your mouse clicks and keystrokes to automate and save precious time!

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Simply go to the Developer Tab -> Record Macro to record a task that you keep on repeating.

For example, copy and paste certain rows to certain rows, filter with list of conditional formulas etc.

Macros can also be edited with Visual Basic programming language (VBA)…

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

After you have recorded the macros, you can simply click “Visual Basic” to edit the code directly to perform higher function.

In my corporate life, I have met problems that I have managed to automate and increase my productivity – finishing my work with a click instead of hours

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

I have created 3 macros after many hours of coding that would definitely solve your problems and improve your productivity.

Let me share them with you. I did the hard work so that you don’t have to!

Let me explain the first Macro – Append Worksheets.

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

If you have multiple files (E.g. 10000) with the same columns that you want to combine into a single file, instead of opening each file at a time, then copy and paste slowly. You can use this Macro to do all these steps with a click of button only.

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Let’s say I want to copy and paste all of them into 3 files. Instead of open, close, copy and paste each at a time. You can do so with a click of a button!

Look at these 3 sample files which I want to copy and paste them into a single file.

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

This is the output with the click of a button.

If you have 10000 files to copy and paste, this macro will do for your with just ONE CLICK instead of hours! Isn’t Macro Wonderful?

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Let me share the 2nd Macro: Append Photos.
Application forms are used in many settings. Usually, we will use Microsoft Forms or Google Forms. In these forms, we may have a field to ask the users to upload photos or pictures.

How do you insert these photos beside each entry?

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

The method that most will use is click the cell that you wish to insert via click “Insert” -> “Pictures”. Then you can edit the picture size accordingly to your liking.

But what if you have 10000 photos? Do you still want to manually insert pictures? It will take hours!

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Fear not! We can use this Macro and finish with a click of button.

For examples we have 5 smiley photos to insert into column E of an excel file.

We just need to insert the file name of the photos into column D -> Then click run macro and your job is done in few seconds!

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

This is the output with a click of button.
Of course, 5 photos you still can slowly manualy insert. Imagine if you have 1000 photos! Do you really want to insert the pictures manually?

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Let me share the3rd Macro: Mail Merge and spilt file.

Mail Merge is a very common tool that many people are using. We can pull multiple column data of an excel file into word files and generate word files as output.

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

However, for mail merge, you can only break your result files based on the number of rows of data that you have selected in your excel source file. But sometimes, we need to break the files based on a particular column of the excel to group certain data….

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

This macro will break up your generated mail merge word file into multiple files with different file name once there is a change in data of a particular column of the excel.

For examples, these are your source files. For every change in file name of column G, you want a new file

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Of course, you can do it manually. But with this macro it is just one click of a button.

With just a click of a button, there will be 3 files generated, break by column G (zone information). Imagines how powerful this is if you need to break 1000 files!

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

This is the output with a click!

Zone1.docx contains Customer1, 2 and 3
Zone2.docx contains Customer4, 5, 6,7 and 8
Zone3.docx contains Customer9 and 10

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

Can you see how powerful Macros are for automation?

I have done the hard work to automate for you so that you don’t have do it yourself!

With these macros, it will definitely improve your productivity!

Why spend hours to do something where you can just do with a click?

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

For a limited time only, these macros will be available at a very cheap cost to you that would save your precious time!

Simply click the link below to purchase!
https://careyourpresent.gumroad.com/

Please feel free to let me know if you need any further clarification about these macros.

Careyourpresent(💙,🧡)

@careyourpresent

I have been through the hard way and know the wonder of automation that will help you save time!

I will continue to create more tools to help you improve your productivity.

Do also share with me if you are looking for any other particular macros that would help you!
