The Three MOST Important Traits of an Investor

Posted on December 14, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Important Traits of an Investor

There are many traits that make a person successful in the financial world. Some people are natural born investors, but others have to work hard to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful.

These three traits that I am going to share below should never be compromised in order to survive and prosper in the Investment Realm.

Current Market

Before I go ahead to share the 3 traits, let me talk a bit about the current market condition. Everyone should know that the market is has not been stable for the past 1 year or so. Most people are suffering investment losses.

Personally, I think this is a bear rally. Of course, bear market rally can go much longer than one think. However, I think the market conditions will worsen, and this could be real soon. Disclaimer: This is the first time in my investing history that I am holding such a unprecedent high amount of cash as war chest to take advantage of any pending crash.

Hence, I thought it will be great to share what I think will be the 3 most important Traits of an Investor in order to be successful in investment. Hope this will remind and get everyone prepared.

1. Patience

Patience is a very important trait because it helps you maintain your composure when things don’t go as planned. You need patience so that you can wait for the right time to make your move and not rush into anything just because you want to get rich quick. Patience also helps you wait for opportunities to arise so that you can take advantage of them when they do come along.

Many investors are impatient – they feel the urge to do something every time when the market opens. He or she must always click the buy/sell button else won’t feel comfortable. Are you one of them?

However, some time doing nothing is the best option. Quoting current market conditions as example, for those who keep buy the dip since early part of the early in Stock Market/Cryptocurrency, ask yourself if you are in profit now?

2. Courage

Courage is the 2nd trait that I want to share. If you can be a patience investor, the next thing that you need is courage when the real time come.

One needs to be brave to click the sell button when everyone is Euphoric (see those who FOMO and enter Crypto last year when BTC was 60k? Many were shouting 1 million for BTC. What is BTC price now? Those who bought US growth stock with 100x multiple earnings ratios saying that everything will keep growing).

One needs to be brave to click the buy button when everyone is panic selling. Did you buy during the 15k HSI Capitulation?

This is really not easy. Are you one of those that panic sell HK stock the day when HSI hit 15k instead of buy? You can refer to the post that I have posted earlier on HSI Capitulation on 24 Oct 2022.

3. Discipline

Discipline is another one of those very important traits when it comes to investing because without it there would be no way for anyone to stick with any kind of plan or strategy that they have set up for themselves. Without discipline there would be no way for anyone to stick with any kind of plan or strategy that they have set up for themselves because once you panic buy (FOMO)/panic sell, then you aren’t going to have anything left over for your investments when the time comes, which means that your investments will suffer greatly as a result.

Always remember to stay Discipline, stay on the course based on the plan that you have devised earlier when your mind is cool, without affected by any market conditions. It can be DCA index investing, buy on dip for dividend investing, set target price to buy hot crypto and then quickly sell off before the narrative dies off etc.

Do you have these 3 Important Traits?

These 3 traits are what makes a person successful in the stock market, but it is not easy to find these traits in one person. There are many investors who do not really have these 3 traits, but there are some investors who do have these traits and they are always successful in the stock market. The reason why they are successful is because they possess these 3 traits, and this makes them great investors.

Do you have them? If no, learn and practice and practice and keep practice. No amount of books/coaching can let you have these traits until you truly experience real market conditions with your own money.

Lastly, please remember.

A good investor is the one that won’t panic sell at very bad extreme market condition/capitulation.

A pro investor is the one that can go against own intrinsic desire to sell at very bad extreme market condition/capitulation and press the buy button instead.

Save this picture and keep these 3 Traits in your mind

People are drawn to dividend investing.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. Additionally, dividend investing is often viewed as a more stable and predictable investment strategy compared to relying solely on capital appreciation.

Money just buy you the chance of freedom.

When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.

Market updates: Be careful with the weeks ahead

Posted on December 11, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Market Updates

Remember my previous post on Market is showing sign of weaknesses or strength NOW dated 4 Dec 2022? Let me give another update today.

Treasury Yields

Everyone knows that the yields are dropping. For example, 10yrs US yields have dropped till 3.586%. Wow it’s so much lower than what we have seen as compared to the recent months. Hence, many people think that the market is recovering, Fed will pivot soon etc.

However, if you look at past one year, example compared to March 2022 (less than 9 months ago), what did you see from the chart below? Does the yield really consider low? Please do your own interpretation.

https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/US10Y

VIX

Let’s look at CBOE Volatility Index (VIX). Can you remember what happened to the market when VIX reach the lower end of 20 and below?

https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/.VIX

In case for those not sure that is VIX, based on Investopedia, this is the definition.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/v/vix.asp

Fear & Greed Index

Next, we look at Fear & Greed Index. What do you see? We are at neutral but nearer to Greed. What does this tell you?

https://edition.cnn.com/markets/fear-and-greed

Metaphysics/Astrology

I understand that this is a bit controversial to investors where people are using Metaphysics/Astrology to predict market condition. From what I have learnt from my friend (do follow him in twitter) who are very into these fields also shared that most of the Masters in this field said that Market will be bad from mid-December onwards.

Conclusion” Be careful with the weeks ahead

From all the above points, markets should not be so smooth sailing soon. Hence, do plan your strategies in order to win in the market!

For those who are in my telegram group/channel (do join us in my groups if you want more real time update) should have already seen what we have posted last Tuesday.

We will see if this will be accurate.

Should I purchase the upcoming Treasury Bill?

Posted on December 6, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Question

Should I be purchasing the upcoming Treasury Bill? This is a question that quite a number of people asking me.

How does MAS Treasury Bill works?

This means what when you apply for 12k for a 6-month T-Bills (for example) and successfully auction and get 10k at 4% yield. On the refund day, you will get back 2000 + 10000*182/365*0.04 = 2000 + 199.45= 2199.45 (assuming 6 month is 182 days). At the end of 6 months (182 days), you will get back your $10k.

For those who are unaware how this work, Treasury Bill is issued by the Singapore Government on a regular basis. From the main website itself, they are short-term Singapore Government Securities (SGS) issued at a discount to their face value. Investors receive the full face value at maturity. The Government issues 6-month and 1-year T-bills.

Upcoming MAS Treasury Bill

The upcoming treasury bill is open now with auction date on 8 Dec 2022. If I look at the past statistics, I will estimate the yield to be 3.5% to max 4.0% (quite likely my guess will be 3.6%).

Should I purchase the upcoming Treasury Bill?

To answer this question, my answer will be no if you have more than 10k to invest.

This because there are a lot more better options available.

Other better options

For 10k, I can simply put into CIMB FD which give 3.95% for 10k for 6 months. I can also put into more liquid accounts such as UOB ONE that can easily go to 5% with $500 spend and salary credit OR OCBC 360 which can go easily to 4.05% with just salary credit and save bonus. All these options provide higher yield with better liquidity.

https://www.cimb.com.sg/en/personal/banking-with-us/accounts/fixed-deposit/cimb-sgd-fixed-deposit-account.html

Other options which include SSB that allowed you to lock 3% plus rate for 10 years. Or simply use Money Market Funds like Moneyowl Wisesaver, which give 3.68% using Fullerton Professionally Managed Cash Solution by Fullerton Fund Management (Temasek-Owned). Low return high return!

You can use my referral link to get free $20-$60 Grab Vouchers when you invest with them. Moreover, there is a promotion until 31 Dec 2022 now where you can get $20 worth of WiseSaver units by 31 January 2023.

Why waste time and take the extract effort to ballot?

Conclusion

Hope this article make your choice easier. Take care and see you next time!

Market is showing sign of weaknesses or strength NOW

Posted on December 4, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

What’s Now?

This is a short post to provide market update and my view. Is the Market is showing sign of weaknesses or strength NOW? Reit/Stocks/Crypto lovers time to buy buy buy?

Market update

The market has a huge one day jump last week before starting to show sign of weaknesses whereas 10 years US treasury yields have been dropping until 3.5% from 4.2% previously. The US market opens with red but closes flat on Friday.

https://www.cnbc.com/markets/
https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/US10Y?qfsearchterm=

The big one-day jump is because Powell said:

FED SAID

The one-day jump is because the market think that Fed had pivoted. This is summary of what Powell said on Wednesday:

  • Smaller interest rate increases are likely ahead.
  • This could start in December.
  • Monetary policy likely to stay restrictive for some time until real signs of progress emerge on inflation.
  • We will stay the course until the job is done.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/30/fed-chair-jerome-powell-says-smaller-rate-hikes-could-come-in-december.html

My Perspective – Market is showing sign of weaknesses again

Do you really think that the Fed pivoted? Think again? Is the interest rate lower now? Will it still rise again or will decrease? Does rise slower mean rate is low, inflation is curbed? With higher interest rate means cost of funding is high, businesses/economies will suffer. Some overleveraged companies might collapse. Let’s wait and see.

CAREYOURPRESENT

I have picked out some of the more life reflecting articles of the CAREYOURPRESENT series. Do read them:

Singapore Saving Bonds – This month SBJAN23 GX23010Z is out! 1st year 2.95%, 10-year average 3.26%! Buy Buy Buy or ignore?

Posted on December 1, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

BJAN23 GX23010Z

The rate is out – it’s not bad 3.26% for 10 years. Although it is lower than last month, but 3.26% for 10 years are not bad! Higher than OA but lower than SA!

Other alternative?

Of course, if you look at Fixed deposit rate (example, CIMB give 3.95% for 6 months), it’s a sure lose in the short term, but good for longer term as we don’t know how long the high interest rate will last! But best option now is UOB where you get 5% if you fulfill salary credit and $500 spending (most people will hit this!) Hence ultimately, it depends on your objective.

Application Details

The amount offered is S$900.0 million as compared to S$1000.0 million, perhaps MAS expects less people to apply?

For those interested, these are the application timeline:

  1. Opening Date: 01 Dec 2022, 6pm
  2. Closing Date: 27 Dec 2022, 9pm
  3. Allotment: 28 Dec 2022, after 3pm
  4. Issuance: 03 Jan 2023 (by end of day)

What’s my plan? SSB Ladder Bonds!

For me I will redeem my June 2022 SSB which give me 1.69% for the 1st year and apply for this issue. In this way I will still have my SSB ladder bonds that I have painfully built up! The rest I will leave in UOB ONE, OCBC 360, CIMB Fast Saver etc. I have shared more about this last night. You may wish to check out this post! (Why buy equities when saving accounts give 5% or more?)

Good articles that you should read!

I always write and share articles, especially on dividends which many people love them. Do read them!

Why buy equities when saving accounts give 5% or more?

Posted on December 1, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Interest Rate

Fed has been increasing interest rate which results in the rate increasing for other countries in the world such as Singapore. We can see from the recent rush into Fixed Deposit, Singapore Saving Bonds, Treasury Bills etc. Saving accounts are also having war every now and then. During the early part of each month for the recent months, banks have been rising rates. There is no exception for today on 1 Dec 2022. Let’s see…

SCB Esaver

This is the account that quite a number has due to its high interest and liquidity nature but the incremental fresh fund is troublesome. From today onwards, until 31 January 2023, SCB is giving up to 3.80% p.a. interest on eligible deposit balance of S$2 million with no lock-in period when you bring in incremental fresh funds* (compared to November 2022 average daily balance).

Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

Source

UOB One Account

UOB this month is really giving the highest interest ever, but you need to do some work.

Maximum effective interest rate (EIR) on the One Account is 3.00% p.a. for deposits of S$75,000, provided customers meet both criteria of S$500 eligible card spend AND 3 GIRO debit transactions in each calendar month.

Maximum effective interest rate (EIR) on the One Account is 5.00% p.a. for deposits of S$100,000, provided customers meet both criteria of S$500 eligible card spend AND a min. S$1,600 salary credit via GIRO/PAYNOW (with the transaction reference “SALA” / “PAYNOW SALA”) in each calendar month.

Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

Source

OCBC 360

OCBC so far didn’t adjust the rate as of now. Most people can easily hit the save $500 and salary credit which means 4.05%. Wow, higher than SSB and the fixed deposit rates recent.

Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

CIMB Fastsaver and Starsaver

For Fastsaver, one can get 2.5% for doing nothing with 75K.

Source

For Fastsaver, one can get 1.5% for doing nothing with 75K.

Source

Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

Let’s answer this question: Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

Enough of the examples, let’s answer this question that I have brought up a few times earlier. Hence, many will ask: Why put in equities to earn dividend of 4-6% with higher risk of capital losses since bank account already given such high rates?

Most people prefer liquid cash as compared to the cash being locked up for a longer period. For the above saving accounts, you can take out the money anytime should you need it. Of course, there are alternatives money market fund such as FSM Autosweep, Money Owl Wisesaver, Moomoo cash fund etc. but the risk profile is different. Bank are secured up to 75K under SDIC insurance or 150K if you combine with your spouse (super safe). Good money market funds are generally safe but no one guarantee your 100% safety. On the other hand, equities are subjected to capital losses. Your dividend may not be able to cover the capital losses.

For safety of their hard-earned funds and for not wanting to lockup the money for an extended period due to capital losses in equities (for equities, you will not want to sell at loss during market crashes), most people naturally preferred saving accounts/money market funds than Equities at current high rate environment.

However, think harder…

If you think harder again, ask yourself the following questions?

How long will these high interest rate last?
If you only put your money in high interest account/money market funds/treasury bill etc, instead of the equities which are relatively much cheaper as compared to last year, what if the interest rate suddenly decreases next year or in 2024? By then the equities might have already recover, you have TO buy at more expensive price should you need somewhere to put your money. By then the saving accounts rate might not be so high anymore, maybe back to low interest, hence you will let your money rot and decay due to inflation?

Other Alternatives

For those who understand the above points but still worry about equities crashes, most likely you would have takes up Singapore Saving Bonds to lock the 3% plus interest for the next 10 years.

Of course, for those who feel equities are attractive now, you would have already bought for the past few weeks especially for those REITs/Dividend Stock lovers!

For those who feel equities may drop further, you would have hold cash and wait for better chance later. Taking a step further, you can hold some Singapore Saving Bonds (which you can at most take 1 month or shorter to take out) or simply put the rest into the high interest accounts/money market funds mentioned above.

(Disclaimer: For me, I belong a bit to 2nd category, but mostly in the 3rd category. I am waiting for the chance to strike big.)

Building Singapore Saving Bonds Ladder

I believe many of you would have heard of the term “Bond Ladder“, but what really is bond ladder? Bond Ladder simply means that you will get cashflow from bonds every month. However, many people like to see real data to fully understand how this work.

Below is a screenshot of from my Singapore Saving Bonds portal that I have been trying to build for the past 6 months. If you see below, I will get something every month next year (June SSB is not yet credited at the time of this post hence you can’t see it), the year after, and for 10 Years. If I need the money for anything emergency or want to buy equities when the market is very bad, I can redeem it within a month or less. Meanwhile earning decent interest while waiting. This is the beauty of Singapore Saving Bonds.

Using the above method would solve the issue that I have mentioned under the “However, think harder” above. Have cake and eat it at same time.

I hope everyone can think through and think longer term and plan according to their own plans and risk. Take care and cya!
