Battle of Enough VS Spending for Financial Bloggers

Posted on November 17, 2023November 17, 2023 by careyourpresent

Recently, there are many “sparring” or “discussion” among many of the financial bloggers for the past few days, especially for those famous bloggers who are financially independent. Let me share some of these posts:

Are Financial Influencers spending too little for their own good? by Christopher who is Financially Independent at age 39 but still conducting courses/part time jobs now.

Gratitude, My Portfolio, and My Qualification to Advice on F.I. by Kyith who is Financially Independent, but still serving in Providend as passion for Financial Adviser.

F.I.R.E. Always have a Plan B! Better and cheaper! by the famous AK who have 200k annual passive income, retired and then enjoying video games.

This also sparkled many discussions on forums.

That results in various comments such as:

If you are spending, you are doing something wrong in this life.

My friend showed me his post of hoarding can food like peanuts, tuna. Eating with bread. He even says $2.50 per meal

$4 cai png is a treat? I fainted

Others find joy in spending excessively, or beyond what they should. Savings is a “burden”, or at least a mere means to an end, delayed gratification for greater reward. But to a man like AK, miserliness is not misery, but ecstasy lol.

Deep down, I genuinely believe this strategic, low-cost, globally diversified, 80-60% equity strategy can give perpetual inflation-adjusted income if we respect the initial income spent relative to the portfolio value (keep it 2.5% or lower)

Adding Oil to Fire

As the sayings goes, 火上加油 (adding oil to fire), this article is not to add oil to fire.

There are people who like to do all sorts of mathematical financial models etc to simulate withdrawal rates, cash-flow, returns based on various assets classes etc, whereas some simply see dividend income > expenses means financial independent etc and can last indefinitely. Previously I have also shared something on this Ultimate Formula for FIRE (Financial Independent, Retire Early). There is one interesting way is passive income > active income.

I won’t be sharing more on this for this article.

I am not going to argue 2.5%, 3%, 4.5% withdrawal rates, and come out with all sorts of financial modelling using past historical data as evidence to substantiate my points. Future is future, past is past. Past work doesn’t means future will work. Past don’t work doesn’t means future will not work. Many try to predict future, but who can? Can you even predict what will happen tonight or even the next 10 minutes?

Different people have different perspectives, even if you argue till the end of the world, nothing will change, especially the views of people who are already 40+ and above, most of their life views, behaviors are already there – fixed based on the past decades of life experiences.

In fact, there is no point to try to change / influence the views of others such that they are same as yours (but apparently, many people are still doing so, don’t know for what purposes), you can of course share, but there is no point of getting into arguments.

“You are so anxious about the future that you do not enjoy the present. You therefore do not live in the present or the future. You live as if you are never going to die, and then die having never really lived.”

Dalai Lama

Your Life is your Life

Your Life is your Life. His Life is his life. Her Life is her life. No two people have the same life experiences, and hence same life perspectives on everything regardless of how similar they are. Learn to let go is important.

Live your own life, share your experiences to help others, not trying to change their life views. It’s ok that others don’t agree with you and you can continue to share, but don’t need to enforce your own views into them. There is no righteous Man that is always right, there is no need to follow others if what you are doing makes you happy.

There are people who are happy with $4 cai png. There are people who are happy with home cook food that cost less than $2 per meal. There are people who eat atas fruits that cost $400 like spending $0.01 daily only. There are people who loves to eat atas restaurant fine dining with $100+ per meal.

So be it, do what you love most? Live your best life with no regrets.

Greatest Regrets in life

https://www.investingnote.com/posts/2698628

Never forget this…

All the money, atas food, lousy cheap food etc, don’t belong to you.

If $10 were stolen from your $86,400 bank account, you wouldn’t throw away the remaining $86,390, right? Similarly, with 86,400 seconds in a day, don’t let 10 seconds of negativity ruin the entire day.

The idea is to focus on the abundance of positive experiences and time rather than dwelling on minor, fleeting negative incidents.

We are all billionaire

We are all billionaire, you may not be money billionaire, but you are your own time billionaire. Time is the most scare resources in this world.

Unlike Money. Time can only be depleted. You can never earn it back.

Time Billionaire

The average lifespan of 80 years is equivalent to 2,522,880,000 seconds. Starting with 60 seconds in a minute, multiplied by 60 minutes in an hour, then by 24 hours in a day, followed by 365.25 days in a year to account for leap years, and finally multiplied by the desired 80 years. The result is an estimated total of approximately 2,522,880,000 seconds in an 80-year lifespan

Every second is gone very fast. Days are long but years are short. Within a flash, we are all grown up. Within a flash, your parents will die, your kids will grow up, you will die one day too. Whatever trivia arguments that you have got into doesn’t have meaning in the short span of life. You can be emperor, president of a country or even the world, but one day you will be gone with the wind, buried in the soil, and after a short one, no one will remember you, especially who argue and is unhappy with you.

Few pictures that change my life.

Money just buy you the chance of freedom but can’t buy back time. In life, there is no reset button. Time is limited but money is not.

When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed (your strong health, time with young child) while busying striking out in career.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

We always thought we have more time with our old parents, but we are wrong. Time with them is ticking away every day. One day it will suddenly be gone. There is no regret medicine, no reset in time. Gone is gone and cannot come back. No matter you are billionaires or millionaires, you cannot reset this.

We always thought that we have more time with our spouse every day, but we are wrong. One day they will be gone too. When you read this, please go tell your spouse that you love him/her and he or she is the best thing that you ever had in your life.

Love your life daily. You have one less day with your spouse, parents, children and yourself. Time is ticking away.

Are you sure that you want F.I.R.E (Financial Independent, Retire Early)?

Posted on October 18, 2023October 18, 2023 by careyourpresent

Many people want to F.I.R.E (Financial Independent, Retire Early), but I don’t, especially in the every inflationary environment. How sure are you? How desperate do you want to F.I.R.E?

How sure are you with the X million(s) that you think you have, or XXXXXX dividend/rental/fixed income you have can last you indefinitely?

UP up Up

Hawker simple Cai Png can easily cost $5 upwards nowadays, transportation fee increases, water and electricity increases. Let’s talk about grocery, the most basic. The prices already increases… before the 9% GST. In case you didn’t notice, even egg cost $8.00 now. Few weeks ago was $7.60, this is 5% increase from $7.60 to $8.00.

https://www.fairprice.com.sg/product/pasar-fresh-eggs-1-5kg-30-per-pack-11194824

When next year come GST becomes 9% from 8%, things will not just increase 1% only. It will increases much more. Even when inflation really come down in future, do you think the prices of things will come down? Given your so many experiences on life on Earth, It’s impossible! Things only rises in price but recent years rise up faster!

Are you sure you want to and is able to F.I.R.E (Financial Independent, Retire Early)? How sure are you with the X million(s) that you think you have, or XXXXXX dividend/rental/fixed income you have can last you indefinitely?

Definitely…

I don’t want to F.I.R.E, but I do want my time back, especially during this period where my kids are 5 and 8 years old where they still need you.

Look at the points below and reflect

  • Grab the time while you are still their world. It don’t last indefinitely. The days are long but the years are short.
  • Some argue to say that work life balance is important, you can take leave; can spend the evening with them (if you are lucky, don’t need to work so late). But…the most alert, energetic period is where one first woke up. But this best time are spent on working. But the time one reaches home, you are tired…do you still have the energy to spend your quality time with them? Most of the time the parents would lose temper when the kids trigger you with something simple…(which kids always do)…SO work life really can balance?
  • Something only happen once in life, if you missed it, it’s gone forever…Kids have things to share with you (their happy, saddness in school), they want to share with you at noon time after they left school immediately…do you think they will still has the mood to share with you after you reach home at 8pm?

No Regrets

Life is fragile…after I seen that passing of so many people around me. Who knows I might be the next one?

I want to continue working, do something useful while earning some money to counter the ever-inflationary world…but time don’t wait for you. I want F.I but not R.E. so that can spend more time on more meaningful things…

But I don’t want to have regret in life – especially the greatest regrets in life.

Quite likely, I will take a career break soon for few years until the kids don’t need me. Hopefully by then still got employer want to hire me…

I been dragging for too long, I shouldn’t wait for too long – what if later never come?

The days are long but the years are short.

Lastly, I want to end with this.

Look at the Image below. It strikes me deeply. Picture speaks more than a thousand words.

I feel this https://t.co/8LiMvOK3VX

Good articles that you should read!

People are drawn to dividend investing.

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. Additionally, dividend investing is often viewed as a more stable and predictable investment strategy compared to relying solely on capital appreciation.

I always write and share articles, especially on dividends which many people love them. Do read them!

Work is part of Life? Do you agree?

Posted on October 1, 2023September 29, 2023 by careyourpresent

I saw this article via Finance Opti. He shared that

DBS CEO Piyush Gupta thinks work-life balance is ‘baloney’ & that work is part of life

But he disagrees with the statement above and brought up the an interesting point

For example, the NUS President is able to have morning walks and talk to his staff at the same time – killing 2 birds with one stone. If you are an employee expected to toil in front of the computer the whole day, if you tell your boss you are going out for a morning walk, he will not take it nicely, right?

NUS President Tan Eng Chye on university rankings and morning walks with staff

For employees, they just do not have enough freedom to manage their time during work hours. As such, work is work. After work, they need to take care of themself/family. So for employees, it is best to keep work and life separate.

Also, employees just don’t have enough ‘skin in the game’ to merge work with life. If they do office work outside office hours, what do they get? Maybe a bigger bonus when it comes to the next round of performance review. For business owners it is different. If their business takes off, the rewards are much more.

What do you think?

When you are in the management role, you can choose and plan your time. You don’t need to sit in your desk from 8.30am to 6pm daily, there is no such thing as work from home or work from office because you can come in and leave anytime as long as the office need you. In fact, for those super high level, you have minion to serve you when you come to office.

That’s why they can make work part of life, especially they are so highly paid with so much flexibility of time.

What about employee?

Whereas, for normal employees, firstly pay are not that high and recently, many of the bosses also like the employee to be in office. You can see from the many recent articles that the offices keep calling the employee to come back to office. Since we are talking about NUS above as example, I saw in this forum saying that NUS is changing from 3 days WFO, 2 days WFH To 4 days WFO, 1 day WFH.

How can a normal employee go out for morning walk when you are supposed to sit and stare at the computer from 830am to 6pm? (even though COVID shows us that many of the works can be done from home. so irony…)

Expectation of high ranking bosses vs normal employees are different.

Conclusion…

Work is part of Life if you are the top flyer with high salary and has the full flexibility of time where as you can work when necessary. For such person, you will work forever and enjoy steady paycheck.

For normal employee, work is only small part of life, to earn that little money for yourself and family to survive. Hence, people want work life balance, more work from home to account for better work life balance/flexible schedule since it has proven that it works during the COVID time.

If money is not a concern, people sure quit and fight for Financial Freedom so that can take back their time. To them, work is only small part of time.

Enough of talking, what’s your view?

Live in Present is not easy

Posted on September 29, 2023September 29, 2023 by careyourpresent

Many of us would have heard of this quote from Dalai Lama

Man! Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.

But is living in present really easy?

Perhaps it was easy in the past, but not today.

Today

In today world, there are overloaded amount of information. People have many needs, wants as well as worries of the future.

There can be people with millions in bank at age 30-50 but worrying if the money is enough for the future 40 years (assuming he is still alive for the next 40-50 years).

Hence, he keep on work and work for steady paycheck daily, grinding, spending time to earn money, instead of spending the precious time with this aging parents, growing up child during their most precious years. In the end he keep work and work for financial security, being so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived. Then live with the greatest regrets on death bed such that he has millions in bank but missed out the great memories,

人在天堂,钱在银行。

But actually, You will likely never run out of money with 1 million: Expectation vs Reality

and do you know Do you know what will happen few hours after you die?

On the other hand…

There can be people with only few thousands saving in bank at age 30-50 but live in present, without worrying if the money is enough for the future 40 years (assuming he is still alive for the next 40-50 years).

He live in present, doesn’t worry about future, nor regret the past. Even if in future got no money, so be it, life will find it way…

Likely he has master the Most Powerful Way to Live in the Moment where he realized

You should never take the Gift of Life for Granted. No one is immortal and will be gone from the surface of Earth one day and that day may come sooner than one think.

OR

He just YOLO (you only live once) and ignore everything.

Don’t forget – Time is the ultimate currency, not money

So how do we balance?

How to strike a balance between having enough money for future while not neglecting the present moment?

Does Let it go work? Ultimately, Our Life only have 5 short Days – we should live the best for every day.
