SAVERs – Best Options to maximise your interests

Posted on January 30, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Interest rates are going down

The short-term interest rates are coming down…banks fixed deposits, Tbills, SSBs are coming down. Currently today is near the end of January 2023, likely banks will announce new fixed deposits rate soon. Quite likely it will be same or slightly lower for a while.

Of course, you if are a saver, most likely you would like to put your money in the safest options that you can ever find in the current market. For many, this would mean the three local banks – DBS, UOB, OCBC or Treasury Bills/Singapore Saving Bonds by MAS.

SDIC Insurance

Please take note of the 75k SDIC insurance that we have. Spread your risks across different banks. For those who are unsure how this SDIC insurance works, do read here.

In the event a Deposit Insurance (DI) Scheme member bank or finance company fails, all of your insured deposits with that member are aggregated and insured up to S$75,000 by the Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation Limited (SDIC). Insured deposits held in trust and client accounts held by non-bank depositors are insured up to S$75,000 per account.

In short, your deposits are insured up to S$75,000 per bank/finance company. If you hold a joint account with your spouse, your deposits are insured up to S$150,000 in total (S$75,000 each, assuming each of you don’t hold other deposits with the same bank/finance company).

For example:

Money in your Personal Account with Bank A: $20k.

Money in your Joint account with Spouse with Bank A: $120k.

Amount not insured by SDIC under your name = ($20K + $120K/2) – $75K = $5K

Amount insured by SDIC under your name = $75K (since max is $75K)

Amount insured by SDIC under your spouse’s name = $120K/2 = $60K

Keep things short, for savers, these are few options which you can consider now.

DBS Fixed Deposit 5 Months Promotion

I have received a notification about this promotion with DBS Fixed Deposit when I logged in to my internet banking few days ago:

3.9% p.a. 5 months fixed deposit promotion for a minimum of $20,000 placed.

Promo code: SR5A.

However, this might be for targeted customers of DBS only. Whatever the case is, no harm to try if you are keen? Simply login to your internet banking and submit to apply for it!

Personally, I have quickly applied in case the promotion code run out!

OCBC 4.08% Fixed Deposit Promotion

8 Month Fixed Deposit at 4.08% for OCBC 360 Customers. Don’t miss it! The caveat is you will need to have OCBC 360 accounts in the first place.

https://www.ocbc.com/personal-banking/deposits/fixed-deposit-account

CIMB Fixed Deposits

With 10k minimum, the rate is 3.95% for 6 months, 4.05% for 9 months and 4.15% for 12/18 Months.

For those who think that the interest rate will starts to go down from here, it would be good for you to lock some funds (remember SDIC insurance is 75k) for the 12/18 Months.

This promotion is only until 31 January 2023 (today and tomorrow!).

My guess is the rate will drip from 1 Feb 2023 onwards, do consider locking up some funds that you may be planning to use in 6/12/18 months from now.

While stock last!

Other Options

There are some savers who don’t like to lock up their funds but still like to get high interest rate. Options for this kind of accounts would be using Money Market Funds. There are many companies that offer this – MoneyOwl WiseSaver, FSM Autosweep, Poems Money Market Funds, Tigers’ Broker Cash Plus, Moomoo Cash Plus etc.

Of course, Singapore Saving Bond is another option, but the current 10 years rate is 2.97% and need 1 month to take out. For those who want to lock up their money for longer term with 1 month liquidity, this is a very good option. Personally, I have put in my emergency funds into Singapore Saving Bonds and built a bond ladder using these.

Personally, for Money Market Funds which give high interest rate with few days liquidity, I have Trust Issue and prefer local companies to hold my funds that I indicate to allocate under “Fixed Income”. Hence, I am only using MoneyOwl WiseSaver, FSM Autosweep and Poems Money Market Funds. Out of these three, I would recommend using MoneyOwl WiseSaver for higher rate of around 4% for savers who like high interest and high liquidity.

For regular DIY investor, I would recommend FSM Autosweep as we can use it to buy equities anytime.

MoneyOwl WiseSaver

MoneyOwl Wisesaver is investing in Fullerton SGD Cash Fund – Class A (SGD) which invested mainly in SGD Fixed Deposit and backed by Temasek. MoneyOwl itself is under NTUC income. It is as safe as you can get!

The latest rate is around 4.01%. This is liquid and you can take out anytime.

https://www.moneyowl.com.sg/wisesaver/

Insure, invest, or do a financial planning with MoneyOwl and get welcome Grab credits when you join using my referral link/code. You can use my referral link (or key in 6SHU-93MC) to get free $20-$60 Grab Vouchers when you invest with them.

To earn the first free $20, simply sign up for WiseSaver which the underlying fund is Fullerton Cash Fund – invested in rolling SGD Fixed Deposit and backed by Temasek. Then put in minimum $10 via FAST transfer to fund this account to earn full liquid ~4% yield. Since free money and risk free, why not?

Conclusion

For those with idling funds and would like to get higher returns, please consider the options above to make your funds work harder.

9 ways to generate passive income

Posted on January 6, 2023September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Passive Income

Passive income is a large part of the world’s economy, so it’s no surprise that there are many ways to generate passive income. Many people also like this idea of passive income which helped you to generate extra cash flow that are more passive in nature. In this blog post, we’ll cover 9 different ways you can earn money without having to work for it yourself.

1 Savings Account/Fixed Income

A savings account is the most common way to generate passive income. You can get interest from a savings account, but you may want to consider opening an online savings account or money market account if you don’t want to deal with paper statements and checks.

To open a regular savings account at a bank:

Check out your local banks. You may be able to open a savings account with as little as $100, but many banks require at least $1,000. Some online banks have lower minimums and don’t charge maintenance fees or other types of fees like brick-and-mortar institutions do.

Treasury Bills/Bonds are also good way to generate more interest.

2 Dividend Stocks

Dividend stocks are companies that pay dividends to their shareholders. Dividends are a portion of a company’s earnings paid out to shareholders, and they can be paid in cash or stock. Dividends can also be reinvested back into the company, which means you get more money for your investment!

Dividend stocks are not as popular as other types of investments like mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) as not many are savvy enough to pick the right stocks, but they do have their advantages:

  • You don’t have to worry about market timing because these companies pay out dividends every quarter; this means that there’s less risk involved when you invest in them because it won’t fluctuate wildly like other types do during times when investors panic and sell off their holdings rapidly due to fear or uncertainty surrounding an event happening around them (such as wars).

3 Create an e-book

It’s not always easy to get people to buy a product, but e-books are one way that you can make money from your content. If you have a knowledge or experience that can be packaged into an eBook, consider writing it and selling it online as well as through traditional channels like Amazon and iTunes or even in your own blogs.

In addition to creating something valuable for readers, make sure you write in a way that makes it easy for them to read and value add to them! You want your book to be enjoyable enough so that people finish reading it without having any problems understanding what happened in the ebook.

4 Create a course

If you are passionate about something, teach it! For example, I know how to build websites and make them look good (and I’m not just talking about WordPress), I created a course on how to build websites using WordPress. It’s been really successful because people have been able to take my knowledge and apply it in their own businesses or lives without having any technical background at all.

Create content that will help others as well as yourself: One way of generating passive income is by creating content that will benefit both yourself and others around you – this could be anything from writing articles on topics that interest you personally but also relate back into your own business goals (such as blogging), maintaining social media accounts where relevant information can be found.

5 Write a blog

Blogging is a great way to generate passive income. There are many different types of blogs and each has its own unique purpose. For example, if you’re interested in making money from your blog, then you can possibly create a monetized blog that focuses on affiliate marketing.

If you don’t want to focus on affiliate marketing but instead want to build up an audience for your personal writing style and interests, then another option is starting a lifestyle or personal finance blog where other people will find value in what they write about (for example: recipes).

To start making money from one’s own content via blogging:

  • Write high quality content that relates directly back into the reader’s life experience (this may mean going outside of their box)
  • Be consistent with posting regularly every week/monthly depending upon how fast things move along at work/school etc., usually once per week during off hours especially if there are no interruptions
  • Then you can apply to advertiser like Google Adsense to earn ad income

Get your name out there by commenting on other people’s blogs and leaving links back to your own blog. This is a great way to build relationships with other bloggers and establish yourself as an authority in your niche.

6 Rental Income

  • Rent out your home. If you have a large house or apartment and are looking for cash, it can be lucrative to rent out the space in your house. For overseas, you could also run Airbnb-style apartments if you would like to stay at one location and earn some extra income from the people who visit.
  • Rent out rooms in your house (or other property). If you have extra rooms that aren’t being used at all, consider renting them out.
  • Rent out cars and boats as well as tools such as lawn mowers and trimmers)! Anything can be rented out as long as there are demands for it! All these items can be easily listed on websites eBay.

7 Invest in a REIT

Invest in a REIT. A REIT is a real estate investment trust, which is similar to mutual funds, but with a structure that allows them to pay dividends to shareholders. The most popular type of REITs are those that own apartment buildings and other rental properties, as well as shopping malls and office buildings. They typically invest their money in low-risk debt or high-quality assets (such as residential property) rather than risky stocks or bonds. This can be an attractive option for investors who want exposure to the stock market without taking on any risk themselves—and it’s often much better than investing directly into individual stocks or bonds! In Singapore context, REIT is one of the most popular solution! However, we have to take note of the potential for rights issue.

8 Staking in Cryptocurrency

Staking is a high-risk/high-return investment. If you’re looking to make money, staking is not the best option for you. However, if you want to generate passive income and are willing to take on some risk, then there are many ways that you can earn money through staking via DeFI sites.

9 Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a process in which you promote other people’s products or services and earn a commission from it. The best way to get started with affiliate marketing is by finding an opportunity that fits your niche, then promoting it on social media platforms like Facebook and Reddit. You can also create content around the topic of the product you are promoting so that people who are interested in buying it will be able to find out more about it through your posts.

Once you’ve found an opportunity that feels right for you, all that remains is promoting! There are many ways of doing this: creating YouTube videos (which we’ll cover later), writing blog posts about how amazing this particular product is…the possibilities are endless! Just remember: if someone else has done most of the work already – then just follow their lead!

Conclusion

In short, there are many ways to generate passive income on your own. You can start by saving some money every month and invest it in the stock market or bonds. If you are not planning on leaving your job anytime soon, then you may want to consider investing in a REIT or rental property instead of a lump sum investment like stocks. These two options will give you a steady stream of income without requiring any managerial skills whatsoever! And lastly – affiliate marketing programs are an excellent way for new internet entrepreneurs looking for extra cash flow while building their brand at the same time!

Did you buy BS22125T 6-Month T-bill? Cut off yield 4.28%! and Market Updates

Posted on December 21, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

BS22125T 6-Month T-bill

If you refer to my last post on T-Bill, Treasury Bill: Competitive or Non-Competitive on what cut-off yield should be submit, I have said the following:

What yield did you submit?

Auction Result

If we look at the auction result, the cut-off yield is 4.28%. Total amount allocated is 4.4 billions out of the 11.8 billions applied. This mean 37.2% are allocated. Out of these 37.2%, 1.6 billions are given to the non-competitive applications.

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/auctions-and-issuance-calendar/auction-t-bill?issue_code=BS22125T&issue_date=2022-12-27
https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/auctions-and-issuance-calendar/auction-t-bill?issue_code=BS22125T&issue_date=2022-12-27

The cut-off yield is 4.28%. This mean that for those who submitted competitive bid >4.28% will not get anything. If we compared to my earlier suggestion in my last post (which I have copied the relevant portion for easy reference above), I have suggested to bid at least 4.2% above if we believe the rates will remains high. What have you bid?

What’s next?

Personally, I have submitted a bit for 4.3%. Ops! I missed by 0.02% (4.3-4.28)! I will get everything refunded. Well this is part and parcel of life, bidding for auction etc. It’s ok, as I have mentioned in my previous post https://careyourpresent.com/best-places-to-put-liquid-cash-now/, we have many other alternatives.

There will be an upcoming Singapore Saving Bonds (SSB) with application close date

27 Dec 2022, 9pm – I will apply this!

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/auctions-and-issuance-calendar/issuance-singapore-savings-bond?issue_code=GX23010Z&issue_date=2023-01-03

For my remaining cash, I will put in MoneyOwl WiseSaver as mentioned in this post. The yield has drop a bit but it is still good rates.

https://www.moneyowl.com.sg/promotions/wisesaver-2022-promotion/

For those who are unaware, WiseSaver is investing in Fullerton SGD Cash Fund – Class A (SGD) which invested mainly in SGD Fixed Deposit and backed by Temasek. MoneyOwl itself is under NTUC income. It is as safe as you can get!

You can use my referral link (or key in 6SHU-93MC) to get free $20-$60 Grab Vouchers when you invest with them. Personally there are readers who have used my referral. Thank you!

Moreover, there is a promotion until 31 Dec 2022 now where you can get $20 worth of WiseSaver units by 31 January 2023 if you open WiseSaver Account. Don’t missed it!

Ending Note – Market Update

Before I end this post, I would like to highlight that the market will going to be bad as more earnings are announced with higher interest rate, reducing liquidity by Fed in 2023 (you can also refer to my related posts on market updates). As the saying goes,

DON’T FIGHT THE FED!

Do keep your funds liquid (which I am doing so via UOB ONE, OCBC360, MoneyOwl, FSM, SSB etc) and wait for the chance to create life changing generation wealth when the time come. Capitulation will come soon in 2023. Take care, plan well and stay safe. It will be very sad when you see good and cheap assets but you have no money to buy.

I will end this post with something that I have replied in Twitter.

People cannot timed because they are blinded by fear and greed. Something are very clear but people like to follow the most easy way DCA. We all have limited funds, can one keep dca all the way down? Very likely will give up halfway and that's it, capitulation!

Treasury Bill: Competitive or Non-Competitive?

Posted on December 19, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

BS22125T 6-Month T-bill

In case for people who are not following the latest T-bill news,

The latest T-bill is out for application with the deadline of 20 December 2022, 9pm and the Auction Date 21 December 2022. Please remember to apply latest via internet banking (Cash and SRS) or in person (CPF) by 20 December 2022. For those who want to apply using CPF-OA and CPF-SA funds, please go down in person to our local banks (DBS, OCBC or UOB).

I have posted the above before in this post (https://careyourpresent.com/market-update-red-and-how-much-would-the-yield-be-for-the-next-bs22125t-6-month-t-bill/)

The deadline is tomorrow for those who want to take part!

What are Competitive or Non-Competitive bids?

I have some questions from people asking what are are Competitive or Non-Competitive bids? Which one should they choose during the application?

From the Treasury Bills website itself:

Competitive Bid

If you wish to invest in the bond only if it yields above a certain level, submit a competitive bid. You can specify the yield you are willing to accept in percentage terms, up to 2 decimal places.

Note that you may not get the full amount that you applied for, depending on how your bid compares to the cut-off yield.

Tip: A lower yield represents a more competitive bid, as you are indicating that you will accept a lower interest rate. You can submit multiple competitive bids.

Non-Competitive bid

In a non-competitive bid, you only specify the amount you want to invest, not the yield. Choose this if you wish to invest in the bond regardless of the return or are unsure of what yield to bid.

Non-competitive bids will be allotted first, up to 40% of the total issuance amount. If the amount of non-competitive bids exceeds 40%, the bond will be allocated to you on a pro-rated basis. The balance of the issue amount will be awarded to competitive bids from the lowest to highest yields.

You will get the bond at the cut-off yield, which is the highest accepted yield of successful competitive bids.

What does this mean in simpler wordings?

If you choose non-competitive bid, you have to put in the amount that you want to invest in the treasury bill. You will be allocated at the cut-off yield based on the auction results. In another word, for example if you put in 10k using non-competitive bid, if there are some unexpected auctioning results where many of the bidders only bid 2%, and the cut-off yield is 2%, you have to take up your 10k (assuming you are allocated everything) at that 2% despite the low rate.

However, if you choose competitive bid, you can specify the amount that you want to invest in the treasury bill and the yield that you are willing to take in. This means that if you bid 4.3% for 10k, and if the cut-off yield is 4.2%, you will get nothing with all the 10k refunded. If the cut-off yield is 4.4%, you will be given XXk at 4.4% depending on how much you have been allocated in the auction.

If you search around, many of the general advice is to pick non-competitive bid if the investor are not really sure how the auction process works.

However, my advice is to to pick competitive bid to prevent any unexpected auction results from happening where you are given very low yield (such as the example above). The worst case if you get everything refunded and use you can use your funds somewhere else rather than stuck in super lower yield treasury bill. This scenario is unlikely, but who knows? Previous previous cut-off yield was 3.9% oversubscribed whereas last cut-off yield was 4.4%?

What yield should you put in for competitive bid?

Let’s do a comparison on the alternatives.

Fixed Deposit

Upcoming Treasury Bill is for 6 months, for fair comparison we should compare to 6 months Fixed Deposit. The highest now is 3.95% for CIMB (see below).

https://www.cimb.com.sg/en/personal/banking-with-us/accounts/fixed-deposit/cimb-sgd-fixed-deposit-account.html

Other alternative

In my previous article (Best places to put Liquid Cash now), the comparable alternative would be MoneyOwl Wisesaver. The current yield is 4.2% p.a.

Do note that this rate is the gross indicative yield of the underlying cash fund, which may fluctuate as market and economic conditions change. It does not indicate the return you get for holding your investments for a year. We will update this rate periodically as the yield changes

It is investing in Fullerton SGD Cash Fund – Class A (SGD) which invested mainly in SGD Fixed Deposit and backed by Temasek. MoneyOwl itself is under NTUC income. It is as safe as you can get!

Insure, invest, or do a financial planning with MoneyOwl and get welcome Grab credits when you join using my referral link/code. I’m already a happy MoneyOwl client, you should check it out too!

You can use my referral link (or key in 6SHU-93MC) to get free $20-$60 Grab Vouchers when you invest with them. Moreover, there is a promotion until 31 Dec 2022 now where you can get $20 worth of WiseSaver units by 31 January 2023 if you open WiseSaver Account.

Let’s compare – The Conclusion

As above, the highest fixed deposit for 6 months now is 3.95% for CIMB whereas 4.2% p.a. for MoneyOwl Wisesaver.

With the fact above, if I am going bid for the upcoming Treasury Bill, I will use Competitive Bid and put the bid as:

  • at least 4% if I want a higher than 6 month Fixed CIMB Rate (if I don’t believe WiserSaver can maintain 4.2% of higher going forwards)
  • at least 4.2% if I believe that the interest rate will remains high under current FED policy such that MoneyOwl Wisesaver will maintain 4.2% or more (which I think will happen, given that the underlying Fullerton Funds invest in FD itself).

Why? Firstly, dividends provide a regular stream of income, allowing investors to receive a portion of the company’s profits on a periodic basis. This can be particularly attractive for individuals seeking consistent cash flow or looking to supplement their existing income. CAREYOURPRESENT

Money just buy you the chance of freedom.

When you are young and working, you exchange time for money. When you are old, you can have lots of money but you can’t buy time back, especially the things that you have missed while busying striking out in career. Of course, if you love your career, and consciously know that you are missing out the first time your child walk or talk, that’s ok, but if you are the other spectrum, please do something about it.

Your kids grew up and they no longer need you to accompany them. They no longer want to sit on your lap to share/do things with you…all these time you spent in your 9 to 6 or even longer cubicles…can the money that you have earned by you back these?

Best places to put Liquid Cash now

Posted on December 14, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Liquid Cash

We all like to make our liquid cash work harder for us. Treasury Bill recently was 4.4% (getting hot) but no guarantee that you will get the amount you want, money will also be locked up for 6 or 12 months.

Of course, there is OCBC 360 giving 4% and UOB ONE giving 5% but you need to do quite a few things before you can get the rates.

For those who want real liquid money (and hassle free) I would recommend 3 options. I will never share things that I never use, so as disclaimer I have all 3 of the options below.

Option 1: MoneyOwl

Option 2: FSM

https://secure.fundsupermart.com/fsmone/cash/autosweep-account

The Autosweep rate is 2.556% now, you can take the money out within 1 day if you submit before 3pm to your verified account. Very safe if you see what it is invested in below.

https://secure.fundsupermart.com/fsmone/cash/autosweep-account

Personaly I am using FSMOne.com to invest in funds & ETFs (including money market funds). FSM is good due to the low comms and the free transfer from FSM to CDP (typically takes less than a week to transfer). If you do not have an account, you can sign up here. Please use my FSMOne referral code: P0413007.

Option 3: Singapore Saving Bonds

https://www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/auctions-and-issuance-calendar/issuance-singapore-savings-bond?issue_code=GX23010Z&issue_date=2023-01-03

Latest rates above, backed by Singapore Government and you can take out within a month. Best of all you will be locked for 3% rate for next 10 years regardless how the interest rate change from now onwards.

Should I purchase the upcoming Treasury Bill?

Posted on December 6, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Question

Should I be purchasing the upcoming Treasury Bill? This is a question that quite a number of people asking me.

How does MAS Treasury Bill works?

This means what when you apply for 12k for a 6-month T-Bills (for example) and successfully auction and get 10k at 4% yield. On the refund day, you will get back 2000 + 10000*182/365*0.04 = 2000 + 199.45= 2199.45 (assuming 6 month is 182 days). At the end of 6 months (182 days), you will get back your $10k.

For those who are unaware how this work, Treasury Bill is issued by the Singapore Government on a regular basis. From the main website itself, they are short-term Singapore Government Securities (SGS) issued at a discount to their face value. Investors receive the full face value at maturity. The Government issues 6-month and 1-year T-bills.

Upcoming MAS Treasury Bill

The upcoming treasury bill is open now with auction date on 8 Dec 2022. If I look at the past statistics, I will estimate the yield to be 3.5% to max 4.0% (quite likely my guess will be 3.6%).

Source:

Should I purchase the upcoming Treasury Bill?

To answer this question, my answer will be no if you have more than 10k to invest.

This because there are a lot more better options available.

Other better options

For 10k, I can simply put into CIMB FD which give 3.95% for 10k for 6 months. I can also put into more liquid accounts such as UOB ONE that can easily go to 5% with $500 spend and salary credit OR OCBC 360 which can go easily to 4.05% with just salary credit and save bonus. All these options provide higher yield with better liquidity.

https://www.cimb.com.sg/en/personal/banking-with-us/accounts/fixed-deposit/cimb-sgd-fixed-deposit-account.html

Other options which include SSB that allowed you to lock 3% plus rate for 10 years. Or simply use Money Market Funds like Moneyowl Wisesaver, which give 3.68% using Fullerton Professionally Managed Cash Solution by Fullerton Fund Management (Temasek-Owned). Low return high return!

You can use my referral link to get free $20-$60 Grab Vouchers when you invest with them. Moreover, there is a promotion until 31 Dec 2022 now where you can get $20 worth of WiseSaver units by 31 January 2023.
