Index Investing in Crypto

Posted on July 18, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

Index investing investing is a very popular of doing investing in traditional finance. What is index investing? Refer to the definition below.

Source: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/i/index-investing.asp

Many people know and admit that they can’t beat the market. Hence, the easiest and most logical way is to join them since you can’t beat them. In Traditional Finance, people will go dollar cost average/value cost average index etf/funds. Some people buy the Vanguard World ETF (VWARA.L, VWRD, VT, VTI, IWDA, SPY etc), or in Singapore Context, dca STI ETF using DBS Invest Saver, Poems Share builders, robot investing platforms like Endowus etc.

For Crypto, it is even more volatile. We have seen drawn down in the 60-90% in the current bear, even for the more prominent “blue-chip” Crypto ETH, BTC etc. Of course one can dca ETH BTC weekly/monthly using exchange like FTX, CDC. However, there is no auto-rebalancing in these CEX. Furthermore, not your key not your coin!

What should we do if we wish to take the approach of index investing in CRYPTO?

One of the more innovative way we have now is using GLP. What is GLP?

In Short, GLP in Arbitrium is about 50% ETH/BTC with the rest in stablecoins and it will rebalance.

Source: Dashboard

I have extracted the more relevant section of GMX/GLP guide from the site itself as below.

GLP consists of an index of assets used for swaps and leverage trading. It can be minted using any index asset and burnt to redeem any index asset. The price for minting and redemption is calculated based on (total worth of assets in index including profits and losses of open positions) / (GLP supply).

For Arbitrum, holders of the GLP token earn Escrowed GMX rewards and 70% of platform fees distributed in ETH. For Avalanche, holders of the GLP token earn Escrowed GMX rewards and 70% of platform fees distributed in AVAX. Note that the fees distributed are based on the number after deducting referral rewards and the network costs of keepers, keeper costs are usually around 1% of the total fees.

Rebalancing?

The fees to mint GLP, burn GLP or to perform swaps will vary based on whether the action improves the balance of assets or reduces it. For example, if the index has a large percentage of ETH and a small percentage of USDC, actions which further increase the amount of ETH the index has will have a high fee while actions which reduces the amount of ETH the index has will have a low fee.

Token weights are adjusted to help hedge GLP holders based on the open positions of traders. For example, if a lot of traders are long ETH, then ETH would have a higher token weight, if a lot of traders are short, then a higher token weight will be given to stablecoins.

If token prices are increasing, then the price of GLP will increase as well, even if a lot of traders have a long position on the platform. The portion reserved for long positions can be treated as stable in terms of its USD value since if prices increase the profits from that portion will be used to pay traders, and if prices decrease, the losses of traders will keep the USD value of the reserve portion the same.

If a lot of traders are short and larger weights are given to stablecoins, then GLP holders would have a synthetic exposure to the tokens being shorted, e.g. if ETH is being shorted then the price of GLP will decrease if the price of ETH decreases, if the price of ETH increases then the price of GLP will increase from the losses of the short positions.

Who say we can’t do index investing in CRYPTO?

However, please do your own due diligence before you start to invest in GLP.

Careyourpresent: Action and not just talk only!

Posted on July 18, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

This is the first post for my Careyourpresent series.

Many people read financial blogs to get ideas on how and what to invest.

However, most they forgot what is life. My Careyourpresent series aim to help to fill up this missing piece as well as serving as a reminder to myself.

Look at this spectacle, it is just a normal spectacle but it has great meaning to me and my family. I hope this will give reader some insight/reminders too. In fact I just wrote this post with this spectacle after not wearing any glasses for 20 years.

Let me share a story and the insights that I have gained today.

Since my primary one, 30+ years ago, I was diagnosed with shortsightedness. I have to wear specs and my glasses degree was increasing every year by almost 100 degree into my adulthoods. I was indulged in computer games as no one accompany me to play since young and I cannot go out. Everyday just play games in order to kill time and feel fulfilled. By the time I was in national service, my degree was 975 and 925. What does these two numbers mean? Basically every morning when I woke up, I can’t see the time on the clock face on the wall. I can’t see the face of the person who is less than 1 m away from me. That’s how sad it was. It was also 20 years ago I took the leap of faith, I went for Lasik and went without spectacles for 20 years.

Recently my eyesight start to deteriorate. My wife asked me to get a pair of spectacle but I refused because:

I still can see most things except only some near reading on computer screen. I am don’t want to wear a spectacle after 20 years of spectacle free. In fact, I can see most things, why waste money and suffer the fate of wearing spectacles? As long as I don’t strain my eyes (force my eyes to see things that I can’t see by squeezing my eyes), my eyesight should not deteriorate and hopefully one day my body will repair the lost sight.

However Today 17 July 2022 – I went to make a spectacle. Why so sudden?

The above is my prescription. As you can see, its only 1.25 and 0.5 shortsightedness. I can survive without spectacle even for computer work but this spectacle has much more meaning than that.

As you may have guess it, since I have suffered the fate of very bad shortsightedness, I don’t want my two kids to suffer the same fate. I believe many parents would feel the same way – they want kids to be better and not to suffer the same fate that they have suffered before.

Given the technology age today, it is very difficult to prevent screen time for young kids, especially there are so many ICT classes in school, even starting from preschool where the teachers start to use ipad to show them videos/songs etc during class. However, I decided to be a “bad strict” dad in term of limiting their exciting screen time. I only allow them to watch 15 min maximum of tv (no phone at all using eye, but they can use phone to listen to songs/music) at interval of 5 minutes since their age of 4, i.e., watch tv for 5 minute, take a break look far for 5 min, watch tv for another 5 minutes and then another 5 minutes break before watching the last 5 minutes. In fact, tv is not everyday, maybe 2-3 time max per week. To put into perspective, a movie such minion is about an hour plus, they took weeks/months to complete the whole movie.

Additionally, I would also try my bring them outdoors, spend every single alive waking moment with them no matter how tired I am. This is my almost daily routine: wake up at 6am, bring them to schools, then go work, after work spent all my time to play with them or bring them outdoor to playgrounds/parks etc. After they sleep at 10pm/11pm etc, I would wake up to complete my unfinish work or do my favorite research in cryptos, stocks, macro, blogging etc and then sleep around 1-2am (which is what I am doing now at 12.54am, blogging, sharing my experiences).

Ok, back to the main story. Despite all these efforts, the fateful day still came this year as my elder son is in Primary One. After the school eye check up, they asked my child to go HPB for a checkup on 11 May 2022 and below is the result.

We are devastated (my son and I). Since young I have been nagging him to take care of his eyes so that he won’t be so high degree as his father and he did his best to follow. With the above prescription, he still can see most things but some of the words on the whiteboards he still can’t see it. We were advised by the doctor in HPB to make him a spectacle so to prevent the eyesight to worsen. We asked him if he want to make a spectacle. He said no for many times regardless of how many time we asked him to or the school teacher asked him to because he said

I still can see most things except only some near reading on school white board. I don’t want to wear a spectacle. In fact, I can see most things, why waste money and suffer the fate of wearing spectacles? As long as I don’t strain my eyes (force my eyes to see things that I can’t see by squeezing my eyes), my eyesight should not deteriorate and hopefully one day my body will repair the lost sight.

Sound familiar for the above line?

My son learnt from me.

Guess what happened surprising today, my son agreed to make his spectacle today less than 20 minutes after paid and left the shop today. We asked him again after we left the shop, he told us yes.

I didn’t realized how impactful I am to his life until today, few hours ago. I didn’t realized I meant so much to him until my wife told me just now after my son say yes.

As parents, we want the best for our kids and always nag/talk/teach them many many life education knowledge/stories/ideas which we think that would be the best for your kids. For example, you should learn to spend within your means. Save money, invest the rest etc.

All these are good advices but NO ADVICE CAN BEAT LIVE EXAMPLE FROM PARENTS. Many of us including me forget how impactful we are to our kids when THEY ARE YOUNG. You are their role model and they will learnt from you. Please remember that the older they grow, they less they need you. You are very impactful to their lives NOW when they are still young.

THEY ARE ONLY YOUNG ONCE. ONCE THEIR YOUNG PERIOD IS GONE, IT WILL NEVER COME BACK. I hope this post will serve to remind myself and readers to Careyourpresent. In fact, currently I am planning/contemplating/boosting up my courage to take the next step of transiting my family from dual income to single income + investment income soon.

Lastly I want to end with the picture below which I saw it few years ago on facebook. Basically this post say,

Your time with kid is really very short. Only after a short while, your kids will not watch cartoons, will stick with friends, lovers, then suddenly started working. If you missed this period, you will never get it back.

Side story:
I don’t know if we are correct to ask him to make his spectacles as after reading some science research reports, I still believe as young kids are growing up, their eyes are also growing, if without getting used to wearing spectacles, their short sightedness may goes away one day as they grow up as long as they don’t strain their eyes during normal days. However, most of the time, young kids will strain their eyes by trying hard to see things that are blur which will usually worsen the eyesight.

Launch of Careyourpresent Series

Posted on July 12, 2022September 27, 2023 by careyourpresent

If we look at the current market conditions:

  • Hyper inflation
  • Potential recession coming
  • Winter for Crypto
  • Pending even more severe bear for markets (my own opinions)
  • QT, liquidity issue
  • Rising interest rate
  • Food storage
  • Wars
  • Astrology/Metaphysics forecast of worse markets going ahead

It is it obvious that the 2nd half of the year will be worse. Hence, please keep cash (I have over 50% cash now), prepare your war chest to whack and be brave to whack in order to earn your generational wealth. when the time comes.

For Crypto, many of the DeFI sites are dying, hedge funds (e.g. 3AC), CEX dying, many rugpulls etc. As shared in my previous post1 and post2, stick to “blues”, keep your tokens in the ledger wallets instead of CEX or DeFI site. When it is the time to hide and wait for chance, please do so and don’t be too brave. Reserve your bullets for the real wars later.

Meanwhile while waiting patiently for the markets, I think I will launch my Careyourpresent series to share my views on how to Careyourpresent first. I have also updated About me in my site to share a bit more about myself. Do read it and share your thoughts!

Lastly I will end this post with two quotations:

De-mystifying terminologies in Crypto

Posted on July 7, 2022 by careyourpresent

DeFi? HODL? APY? APR? TVL? FDV? CEX? Staking? Farming? NFTs? Huh? I have been seeing these terms in Crypto but what do all these terms mean?

For those who just started in Crypto, I am sure that you will be confused by all these terminologies. As Crypto more popular recently, more and more of such acronyms are created/appears.

Let’s de-mystify these terms!

DeFi

This refers to Decentralized Finance. Instead of having the banks and institutions governing on money, financial products, and financial services, the services are rendered in a decentralized matter via blockchains.

CEX

This refers to Centralized Exchange. Centralized exchanges (CEXs) are cryptocurrency exchange sthat is operated by a company that owns it in a centralized manner. Example, Crypto.com, Huobi, Gemini, FTX etc. This is similar to the traditional finance Hong Kong Exchange, London Exchange etc.

APY/APR

APY is Annual Percentage Yield whereas APR is Annual Percentage Rate. The main difference between APY and APR is APY takes compounding interest into account while APR does not. Simply put, APY refers to the compounding effect. This means that acquired interest rates contribute to the calculation of the next interest rate.

TVL

Total value locked (TVL) is the overall value of crypto assets deposited in a decentralized finance in DeFi protocols.

MCAP

Market Capitalization is simply obtain by multiplying the coin’s price by the number of coins in circulation.

FDV

Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV) can simply be defined as the Market Cap of the project once the maximum number of tokens have been issued by the development team

MCAP/TVL

MCAP/TVL is the ratio of the Market Capitalization to the Total Value locked. This is a common valuation metric used in cryptocurrencies. Similar idea to the Price to Book ratio in Traditional Finance.

Wallet

Wallet is is a cryptocurrency wallet that are used to send and receive cryptocurrency, and they allow you to view how many tokens you have available to use.  Example: Metamask, Solfare etc. The wallet can be “hot” or “cold” depending if it is connected to the internet. The generally recommendation is to always use Hardware wallet which is cold wallet.

Airdrop

Airdrop is a method where the tokens are sent to various wallet addresses who met certain criteria, example, hold certain tokens, participate in some activities. Airdrops are usually utilized as a marketing tactic to stimulate engagement, and performance, of the respective token and underlying organization/platform, usually before launch.

ICO

Initial Coin Offering. is a method that funds are raised for a new cryptocurrency project. ICOs are similar to Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) of stocks.

Dapps

Decentralized application.. Applications designed by developers and deployed on a blockchain to carry out actions without intermediaries, i.e., decentralized.

WAGMI

Cypto slang. WE ALL GOING TO MAKE IT!

HODL

Cypto slang. HOLD ON TO YOUR DEAR LIFE!
